Artificial vs Live Bait

ICE, thanks for the reponse.I am ROFLMAO about the barbs in buttocks comment. I have been lucky (knock on wood or my head) that I have only had one in the forearm. I too enjoy a lively debate and have been known to mix "toungue in cheek" and serious discussion together to the point that it can be hard to separate the two; nothing personal intended as well.

About now my Smallie fishing buddies on this forum will be suggesting we get a room-LOL and KT is putting down his popcorn.

I think the barbless concept would undoubtably have significant impact. My son and I just had that discussion when we were pre fishing for a tournament and as usuall barbs were pinched down. I know when you bury a buzz or spinner bait hook it can do a lot of damage on the way out.

The flyrod details you provided is exactly the type of information that needs to get promoted and taught. I would suggest you make a seperate post detailing the same information and the benefit to encourage all the flyrod guys to pay more attention to those details.

I tried the flyrod thing in 88 with the low water but was too lightly equipped. Caught some nice fish but the battle was ongoing for way to long. If I try it again I will have to gear up to the weight levels you mentioned.

Keith, good topic to have on the board because wether we fish with spinning gear, fly gear, live bait or artificical any changes we can make to find ways to conserve the resource is good.

Ice, enjoyed the humor and debate and someday maybe we will cross paths up my way.

I've been fly fishing for years and maybe plastics would win on a lake but I'm sorry RR I'm pretty sure that on a river the flyrodder will win. Post the date of the challenge and I'll be there.

you guys have to be kidding me, there is no dam way a flyyrod would win, Ive been fishing this river since I was 4-5 yrs old and am not a newb, there is no way a fly would win, I could care less about the frickin conditions or anything else having to do with it. Once you limp wristers learn how to properly measure a fish I will take any of you up on that challenge, actually Ill take all 3 of you on that think a flyrod would beat conventional tackle (thats right 3 on 1 for those tha need clarification), and by the way I dont fish plastics all to often actually about 10% of the time.I will leave my tactics and tackle a secret and no its not illegal or dynamite. So the next time one of you limpwristers has a stinking 16" dink on and it takes you 4 hours to land it, you have something to ponder.....

And I suppose your throwing that bait on a 6wt fly rod with 4x tippet to huh? and letting em take it before setting while letting em fight for awhile before you bring em in.... Thats what I always do to.... screw the resource theres plenty of other rivers out there tongue.gif bassturd

Ice,

hmm... perhaps a little chip on someones shoulder? Then again we had an excellent float. Watching Ice bust some bass with the fly rod was cool... all fish were landed quickly. Thanks again for the grub!

I fish some of that stretch two, three times a week using both bait and artificials. I killed two fish the last two weeks using bait(not with Ice). Clipped the line but I have my doubts. Perhaps I'll switch to the fly... Better duck!

If we're talking which bait's better-- particularly in summer-- consider two days on the river with Mr. Genz, who's a big fan of redtails for smallmouth. On the trips, his fish clicker read "98" and "107." I really wanted to prove that plastics could be nearly as productive, so I started with several top plastics options, then switched to plugs, etc. It wasn't even close. Smallmouths on the river flat out chow on redtail chubs. Use a #1 Eagle Claw L702 non-offset circle hook with the barb filed down-- you'll harm almost no fish at all-- and very probably fewer fish than you would with plugs, topwater, buzzbaits, etc.

I don't see why you think that bait automatically kills more fish than artificials. I myself have never intentionally fished for smallmouths with bait, but I don't see why a jig and minnow is any different than a jig and plastic worm or tube? confused.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
