bluffhntr....

Alot of the resorts on Cass Lake are very accomadating, and most will be what you are looking for, it mostly depends on which side/end of the lake you what to be on. However I really enjoy Break On The Lake Resort. You should have no problem keeping the children entertained no matter where you decide.

I would agree with Muskiegirl. We have just come home from a week at Break on the Lake. They have alot for kids, a pool, games, kayaks, paddle boats. We have been there 5 years in a row and we like it. ps. Brian we did go into Kitche on friday Mark had a 35"-40" follow his bait in, gave him a thrill! Caught a few small Northern. Had a good time. We went to Pike Bay in the afternoon and did good on Perch till the rain started and did not end till late friday evening. Thought we would run into you at the dock to say goodbye but you must have been doing your chores. So bye for now thanks for your help and see you next year. Back to the countdown to Cass let see? 362 days to go, wow thats depressing!! Rick

We stayed at Break on the Lake for the first time last year and had no complaints. That is the only time I have ever been to Cass. I am looking for lodging for labor day weekend. Break on the Lake is one option but I was wondering how Sunset Cove resort is by comparison. I have 2 kids age 6 & 3 and was wondering which resort would be a better fit. although I love to fish wealleyes, I would like to find some panfish for them also.

First, good to hear you had a good time out there. Sunset Cove is a nice little area with some nice cabins and the people that own it are very friendly and nice people. Cabins and the Lounge have been remodeled and nice. I dont know much about other resorts. Ask for AL at Sunset, he can help you out with the fishing.

I guess this would be a good time to put a plug in for our resort. Our family has been coming up to Cass Lake for 20 years and have always stayed at Wishbone Resort. They run a clean place, most cabins are less than 5 years old now as they have been replacing the old ones with great new ones. Our cabin is brand new this year and we can't wait. We do our share of drinking and poker playing in our cabins but the place is not a wild drinking place with loud music playing, though they do have a bar with a juke box that gets pretty lively at night. I don't really have to plug the place too hard as they are usually booked most weeks during the summer. I would give them a call and see if there are cabins available and would not hesistate to recommend them. They are a family run camp that puts on a great steak night dinner on Wednesdays and they run a pretty good dock too. Try em, you'll like em. Windy

would one of these resorts have good dock fishing for the kids

Rocky,

I can attest to the good fishing off the docks of Wishbone Resort. I was waiting for my father in law one morning a few years ago and while I was waiting on the dock I thought I would try out a new Zara Spook lure that I had bought. I casted it out to some lily pads that are on the side of the dock at Wishbone and started to walk the dog retrieve the lure back. A 5 lb largemouth smacked the lure and took me under the lily pads for a 10 minute fight to get the fish out of the pads. After releasing that fish I casted again a little further up the pads and a 3.5 lb large mouth hit the lure. People were in shock at seeing me land 8.5 lbs of largemouth bass in two casts from the dock! Give them a call, Bill and Lois are the owners and their son Ron and his wife Linda also run the place. Great folks! We will be heading up there in 12 days for a two week vacation, I can't wait! Windy

Hey Rick,

Sorry we didn't see each other before you left. It was a very busy week for me and running around with the head cut off seemed to be the normal routine. I wouldn't dwell on how many days it is until next year...that is frown.gif

Take it easy and keep getting your Cass fix on here!

This seems like a good spot for my question. Are there certain places better equipped for a bigger group?

My dad is looking to put together a family trip with kids/grandkids, so we could end up with 7-10 adults, 5-6 kids (age 5-12). (Doesn't it sound like fun crazy.gif)

None of us are "trophy" fishing, quantity would be much more important.

Also, I'm sure anyone reading this is partial to Cass Lake, but we'd be open to other areas.

Try Break on the Lake resort. Tell Steve Ken said to call...

Good Luck!

Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
