I am thinking about a new bow. I was thinking mathews, but I see this new Hoyt looks pretty good. Anyone use these units?

Two falls ago, I bought a new PSE on a special they had where it included four PSE carbon arrows, sights, rest, everything included for $400. Of course, I tore all that off and put what I wanted on there.

PS- hows fishing been for you?

DHM, I have an '06 Hoyt Protech and I love it. It's a great bow! I shot Mathews, Bowtech, and Hoyt (these are the Big 3 in my book) and they all make great bows. However, I liked the Hoyt best. Shoot them all and see what you like best.

Also, if you have specific questions, try dropping them in the archery forum- lots of good info in there.

I agree with Scoot...even thou I shoot a Matthews. wink.gif

I shoot a '05 Bowtech and absolutly love it. The top 3 bows are definately Matthews, Bowtech and Hoyt (not in any particular order). I think that Bowtech gives you the most for your buck, Matthews is good but definately overpriced. I've actually had guys with Matthews bows wanna shoot mine at the range.

Slow 'eye bite and time to get out there has been tough. Been golfing more. Looking forward to Flag Island in late July.

I am with you guys. I know it is a Ford vs Chevy thing but I shoot a Golden Eagle right now and it has been a good starter bow, but I want to upgrade.

I am thinking Hoyt as well. I am thinking about the Trykon XL.

I may post in archery area.

Any other thoughts?

Shoot them all and go with the one that makes you happy. From the research I did before buying my 1st bow...all the top end models of Hoyt, Bowtech and Matthews are great bows...its just whatever fits you the best. You might want to make a trip up the the new super scheels store in Fargo after they open this weekend...I heard they are going to have a much better/bigger archery department..and they carry Hoyt, Bowtech and Matthews. Try them all...and good luck in your search.

I agree, it's almost like trying on shoes, everyone requires different things from their bow. I personally have an 05 Bowtech allegiance and I wouldn't trade it for another bow and $1000. I have nothing bad to say about any new bow out there. Last summer before I bought mine I shot over 15 new bows... and they were all great, they just "feel" a little different. Another big factor on buying my bow was the archery dept. which I got it from. I was not to happy with the service from Scheels and that was one factor why I didn't fall in love with the Matthews bows. The most helpful, no pressure sales people were at Gander Mtn. Cabelas, and Sportsman's Warehouse. Shoot them all and you'll probably agree that 90% of them would make you happy!!

Sales people can make a big difference. Do you know if all the Big Stores have all of the Big brands?

Posted

You won't find Matthews, Bowtech or Hoyt at the big stores like Gander Mtn and Cabelas, you'll have to go to an archery store for them. However Gander Mtn does sell Diamond bows which are made by Bowtech and are actually great bows for the price.

Went up to the super scheels and holy smokes was it busy. Wanted to shoot a couple of bows, but there was a waiting line. This was Wednesay at 11 am.

I'll keep you updated.

Hey, I was also there at about 11am on Weds. Yeah, it was busy. To be honest, I didnt think the new Archery shop was any better then their old place. They need to get a bigger selection of sites, releases, arrow rests..etc. I thought it was pretty sad that they dont even sell raw arrow shafts.

I bought a Hoyt last year and absolutely love it!!! Quiet and fast.

I wish I could figure out why anyone would need to spend $500-$1000 on a new bow.....I've still got my 18 year old PSE that seems to shoot a deer every year and ocassionally a bear.....Someone please tell me why I need a new bow!! I love new hunting stuff when I think it's necessary....please convince me grin.gif

UPDATE --

I loved the new Trykon and I was sure I was going to buy. Liked the looks -- etc. Glad I shot them both. I shot the Mathews Switchback at the same time and I am SOLD on the Switch. For me it felt better -- smoother.

It is Ford or Chevy and I am "a FORD tough man. That's all I drive" -- At least that is what Toby said. wink.gifcool.gif

Just don't tell me wife how much it was. crazy.giftongue.gifcool.gif

Congrats on your new bow and welcome to the dark side grin.gif.

Which arrow rest did you go with?....and what arrows are you shooting?

Posted

I went with the brisket or bisket or whatever arrow rest and the Carbon arrows. I went with a little heavier arrows.

I used a Easton super slam II in the past. I'll check on new brand.

A whisker biscuit? Those are pretty nice but one that I like even better is the N.A.P. 360 arrow rest, same concept but it doesn't wreck vanes like the whisker biscuit is known to do. I prefer to go with the drop away rest though grin.gif Carbon Express Maxima arrows are my personal favorite too smile.gif

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
