Just wanted to let you know that over the weekend there were 2 Navionics boats mapping the lake in front of my house. It should be one great map based upon the detail they were trying to obtain. They went right up to each island, boulder, stump, and you name it to document it and the depth. Can't believe how much gas they must go through in a day and propellers!! Stay tuned for the release date.

It was 3 years ago (I think) when I was down at Moccassin Point getting gas and two of the owners of Lakemaster were gasing up their 2 plotting boats. We had a great conversation about what they were doing and the scope of the map they were creating. The result has been pretty impressive. It is Navionics ready and I was under the impression that it was even a joint venture at the time. I'm probably not accurate on those facts though. Even with the detail you could spend a lifetime fishing Vermilion and never come close to exploiting all the secrets still within the small details of the lake. So cast until your arms fall off and hammer your hooksets!

Try 7 Navionics boats.

1 foot contours.

Tiny reefs are specs on a map. hope they dont get those.

Saw at least four of the seven boats near Glenwood and they confirmed to me it'd be 1 foot contours and available next year.

at the moment Navionics is including the lakemaster version on their premium chip.

Just bought the lakemaster chip. Oh well, what's another $150. frown.gif

I hope they have a exchange program for there gps chip.

I seen them at the Y-store and they also told me that they were going up to Pelicon and LOW to update all there maps. And they will all be in the 1 ft contour. I wish they would do Birch Lake in Babbitt.

I have a good one. My Lakemaster Maps (1 Month old) had me about 20' on land while trolling next to Grassy Point. It was consistantly off on that part by 20-30'. Other areas where right on.

I hope they do make an update of Pelican. I just moved into a house about 1 mile from the lake and it is definately my main fishing lake. My current Navionics chip is missing a huge amount of drop offs and bars and I don't exactly want to take off my lower unit this summer. Did the Navionics guys say when they expected to have this completed? I'm seriously thinking of going to a Lakemaster chip but don't know how accurate they are. Anyone have experience using a Lakemaster or Navionics chip on Pelican?

Thanks

I don't think we will see the new map until next year.

I've also been on the lake and the gps showed me on land, for one thing don't count on it being exact for the buoy markers and go flying across the lake at night thinking that you will not hit anything because they are off as well.

I’m using the Lawrance 6500 and it shows me how far off I am from being exact. Normally I’m off by 15 to 25 feet either way.

the navionics chip currently uses the lakemaster map for vermillion. if u remember ther original chip had 21 lakemaster maps on it. the map is 3 foot contours. any new chip will not be out until next spring as navionics adds new chips to their lakes every year. looks like most will be buying two chips for their unit as lakemaster should FINALLY have their new chip out for next year.

the chip is only as accurate as the gps and if the gps is off then the chip will be also

for peclican, you have dnr or hot spots maps, which means they have been drawn by guides and not surveyed. they are not accurate at all, where the surveyed lakes are for the most part

lakemaster says look for their new updated chip in sept, they also said it would be out by last jan.

look for both updated chips in jan, expect to be able to own by march from my experience.

hope this helps jon

The information posted here is conflicting from what I got straight from Lakemaster. The following is a "copy/paste" from an email I received from them on July 10, 2006.

Thank you for your interest in our products. At this time Lowrance has not stated weather or not there will be an upgrade option for the Lakemaster SD cards or not. It is at Lowrances sole discretion if they will have an update or not. The chip is manufactured by LEI (Lowrance). When we find out what will happen we will certainly post this information on our website.

----------------------------------------------------

Does anyone else out there have verified information conflicting this, or is it all hear-say? I have heard this for a while, but I decided to go directly to Lakemaster.

I talked to one of the guy's from lakemaster at he Y-store and he said that they just got off the lake and that they were doing a update on there chips. I don't think they would pull 8 boats up here that said lakemaster on them to go fishing.

Now is that an upgrade to the chips or the software? My understanding is that the software is on the way, but the chip is unknown and up to Lowrance.

Here is what I know. I personally know one of the mappers for lakemaster and they are indeed doing new mapping of the lakes in the area. They are constantly mapping new areas and lakes. Lowrance produces the chip that is compatible for their units and Lakemaster provides the maps to be downloaded on those chips. I am not sure of the politics related to the upgrade, but it is in the Lowrance hands now and is up to them. I am waiting for the new chip as well and cannot understand the holdup. Hope this helps.

I bought the last LakeMaster map chip of Vermilion from Lakemaster, NOT from Lowrance.

Quite frankly, I don't think this latest survey was LakeMaster. I think it was Navionics. (But I've been wrong before --- that was the time I thought I was wrong but I wasn't.)

HansB you are correct the boats on Vermilion are not Lakemaster boats. They belong to Navionics. We are very excited for the new map because of the additional structure the surveyors found.

I'll confirm that the boats I saw on the Friday before Memorial day were Navionics boats. They drove up to about 5 feet off the end of our dock on Ely Island and were making North-South runs all evening.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
