Was wondering if many of you have fished this lake. It is located just south/west of Grand Maris? I have a cabin rented late next month for the family and noticed the walleye count is very high on the DNR site. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide to help me target them.

Sorry it aint a secert up there. My grandfathers cabin is on Cnty road 7 and i spend alot of time on Pike Lake. Usally do well on walleyes but the small mouth fishing has been good the last few years for us. I like to fishing the evening bite with bobbers and leeches. I heard that Trout lake has a heck of rainbow bite going on at this time. There are some nice breaks along the north side and south side of the lake some small points is where i normally set up so the wind can drift the bobbers up on the break bring lots of jig heads and hooks northerns and rocks get me all the time. That should be a start i hope good luck

Thanks Monstermoose,

I have the third week in August reserved. Will be up there with the wife and kids. Let me know if your around that week as I may be able to sneak away for a few hours to do some serious fishing. Can't wait to get up there, I love that area of the state....

Biggerfish - We used to go up almost every year while Pike Lake Resort was in business. Since they sold out we have not been up there. Where are you staying? Jake

A buddy of mine was up there last week. 1 walleye, lots of 7" - 10" perch, several smallies and pike. He's been fishing the lake for 30+ years - slowest walleye ever. FWIW

Anglerjack,

It is a private cabin that I'm renting.

That is not good news about the Walleye......

Yeah - 15 or twenty years ago we caught lots of walleyes in the evening - anchor on a drop and put out slip bobbers with a leech or jig and leech. Last time I was there (4 or 5 years ago) I tried every thing I could think of - caught one walleye. Lots of smallmouth action though. Still love the area - beautiful. Is the cabin you are renting available to others to rent or is it a family thing? If they rent it out, I would be interested in a name an number. Thanks and good luck, Jake

ITS ONE OF THOSE LAKES THAT ARE VERY CLEAR, YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO SEE 20FT DOWN AND SEE BOTTOM. EVERY TIME WE FISHED THE LAKE, IT WAS IN JUNE AND THE FISHING WAS GREAT. (MY GRANDPARENTS KNEW THE PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THE OLD RESORT) THE PUBLIC LANDING AT THE LAKE IS VERY SHALLOW, MIGHT WANT TO BRING YOUR WADERS. THERE USED TO BE SOME 1LB+ PERCH IN THE LAKE. ORIGINALLY THE LAKE DIDN'T HAVE ANY NORTHERNS IN IT, BUT ONE OF THE CONNECTING CREEKS OVERFLOWED AND THEY NOW HAVE PRETTY MUCH TAKEN CARE OF THE NICE PERCH. THERE IS A 12INCH MAX.ON SMALLMOUTH BASS ON THE LAKE.

GOODLUCK FISHING

The eyes where hot a few years ago and word got out, and man they got pounded from openor till fall. The lake is best for eyes at night when theres a small chop. Smallies are all over the lake. I am on Pike Lake Rd.

Wow,

Is there more than 1 launch on that lake? The only one I know of has very limited parking and well, the launch is quite bad. Are there any resorts on it? How about cabins, are there alot? Where could all these people come from and fish from? I believe this is a 900 acre lake.

Thats all there is. There was talk of a new one but have heard zip lately.

As far as I know there is still only one launch. 30 years ago there were two resorts - Pike Lake Resort and Wildwood Resort. Around 25 years ago Wildwood sold out as individual cabins. Jim and Jodi Daugherty ran Pike Lake Resort for quite a few years, then sold to their daughter and her husband. Around 5 or 6 years ago Marshal and Jill sold it - now it is individual cabins. I believe that one of them is available for rent. The Schliep family has a cabin that is available for rent. Other than that, there is no resort on the lake. There are quite a few cabins on the lake, but it doesn't seem that there is much boat traffic. The smallmouth size limit was eliminated last year. I have many fond memories of family times on Pike Lake. When Jim had the resort, we would rent all of the cabins for a week or two every year - great times and usually great fishing. Mybe the walleyes are still there - I saw on the DNR report that the last survey said the walleye population was the lowest since 1956. Maybe they will come back. I talked to a guy at the Grand Marais DNR who thought that the pike were what was being hard on the walleyes. Good luck and hope you have a great time! Jake

Anglerjake,

Just got back to the office after two weeks in the BWCA area. What a great place. We did alright, but I didn't get the line in the water as much as I wanted. My 4 year old caught a 17" Walleye the first day we were are the cabin. Unfortunatly I failed to find another on the rest of the week? The Smallmouth were a blast though. Caught several in the 4# + range.

I'm looking forward to next year already....

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
