My wife and I will be staying on Osakis without our kids (I just had to add that) July 16-22. I have looked at a map of Osakis and have marked many places that I want to try.

That being said, I have a threefold question:

1) My wife and I love to catch bluegills and sunfish. Any thoughts on where to go?

2) We want to catch some northerns too, preferably by trolling. Any suggestions?

3) We also want to fish for some walleyes early in the morning but especially after dark. We just want some time on the water after sunset with Wave Busters and a light stick.

Like I said, I have looked at a map and have many spots marked and transferred to my gps but I thought I would throw it out to you all.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.S. I seriously consider hiring Agape for a guide but just couldn't work it out. I know that is the best way to get the answers to my questions but I just can't do it at this time. Maybe next year.

I've been fishing Osakis since 1968, and if you want sunfish, try fishing with a small chunck of crawler or a whole angle worm beneath a bobber next and I mean right against the bullrushes on Crow Point. Try to put your bobber in a small nook or cranny in the rushes as they like to hide amongst the rushes. Use at least 8 pound test line as lease blugills will wrap your line around the bullrushes!

Also try by the "Outlet" area amongst the cane and various emergent vegetation as this is where the sunfish will hang around! Also, have a good pair of polarized sun glasses and use your electric trolling motor to scout around to find the schools of gills.

Ifinz you want northerns, just troll rapala's on any flat (9'-12'of water) and you will catch pike and walleyes!

Night fishing for walleyes on Osakis is a bust! The bugs will drive you off the water guarenteed! You will see if you don't believe me!

Early morning trolling on any flat (9'-15') with #5 shad raps any color will catch walleyes for sure.

Good luck! grin.gif

For alot of northern action and a few walleyes troll the east side of the lake next to the pencil weeds its a hard bottom without alot of weeds most other places youll pull your hair out trying to follow weed edges spending all your time taking weeds off. your can troll a #5 shad in 7 to 8 feet and its awesome.

First, I think the bugs will be a problem at night. When I really HATED laugh.gif fish, I mean REALLY HATED WALLEYES grin.gifand wanted to catch them at night I would use a head-net, otherwise I think the bugs will force you from the lake. Check in-town at the bait shop, but I think it has been a couple of weeks since the end of the panny spawn and the big "gills" could be setting up on the deep rocks. If they are use 4 pound test on the rocks and definately 8 pound in the pencil reeds (hard stems). Northerns, for good fish and eaters I would look for a deep break coming up agains the pencils, then troll cranks or single bladed spinner-baits with the skirts removed and replaced with a mediun sucker. Remember your big northerns are probably already moving to deep water to set-up on the pelagic populations of prey, wow say that fast 3 times blush.gif Depending on where you are staying (assuming it's on the lake) a number of the resorts have good to excellant dock fishing at night, and then it's just a short walk to get away from the bugs.

Thanks for all of your input and suggestions. I appreciate it!

The small fish bite is on now, but if you're catching all little ones, keep moving. When we've caught good ones on a spot we haven't caught many little ones.

Only one more week until vacation at Linwood Resort on Osakis! Any other suggestions? Any updates? Thanks!

There was a tourney last weekend and because the wind was straight out of the north, the south side was really producing down by half mile. I heard of some nice fish (6 lbs) coming off of cranks and spinners.

Good Luck and have fun!

Thanks! We leave on Sunday!

Let me know how it goes, I will be staying at Holiday Resort the last week the last week of July. We have been perennially frustrated trying to catch walleyes on that lake.

Lots of little Walleyes on the main bars in any depth between 15' and 25'. If you want some bigger ones you will find them in the weeds (5' to 6' of water) Pull spinners at about 2 miles per hour to keep above the weeds. Good Luck.

Well, we had a great week on Osakis. Fishing on Monday and Tuesday was horrible. Part of that was me learning the lake a bit and the other was the weather.

On Wednesday we found the panfish and had a blast.

On Thursday, my wife had a number of firsts, first rockbass, first smallmouth and first walleye.

We ended up catching a number of small walleye. We kept a few that were above the slot. We also tangled with some northern and a couple of those are pickling as I type.

All in all a great week and I sure hope we can stay at that resort again.

Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
