I just bought a little 12' fishing boat. It's my first boat and I'm excited to get going on hitting fish that are bigger than my finger. I've been to silver a could of times. I live close to Phalen, but haven't been out there yet. Can anyone give me some idea of a couple good lakes in the are that I can catch some bass, norther, decent pan fish and/or eye's from? I'm going down to clear lake this weekend but I don't want to drive an hour and a half to fish all the time. Would just like a couple of decent lakes close to home for during the week.

Keller has some BIG bass and Muskies.. you just have to find them. Usually in the shade. Phalen has nice bass, pike, white bass and eyes.. Silver has eyes, pike, bass and muskies...

All the lakes mentioned should put you on fish. There is another little lake you might want to try and that is Wabasso or Owasso. Wabasso is very small and has good fishing but many with big boats can not launch. Owasso has nice eye population. There is also Island lake which has great bass fishing. Long lake another East metro fishery that will produce. One final samll body of water is off of Rice street over by Joe's it is call McCarrons.

If you want bigger bodies of water try White Bear and Bald Eagle. If you expand the East metro to include bodies of water by Forest lake there are many good lakes that way

THERES WHITEBASS AT PHALEN!?!?!? Who has caught any there? Where? I live not even a block from Phalen...I've never seen a white come out of there.

Posted

I would say phalen is a great choice for a 12' boat.. since it's an electric motor only lake... assuming you have one.

The White Bass in there were stocked by local residents. I say maybe a population estimate of anywhere between 30-150. I've caught a few there too by luck.

If your going there to target White Bass it's highly unlikely that you will catch some. I used an underwater camera afterwards to check around the whole lake and found

a few them schooled in certain areas. Mostly the sandy flats. I was quite surprised.

Thanks for the info. What kind of lakes are up in Forest Lake area? I'm willing to drive a little during the week. Weekends, I'll go pretty much anywhere the wife will let me drive to. Hehehehe

Well if you in the Forest Lake area then you should be fishing Forest Lake. I guarantee you there are some big skies in there. Few nice crappies too.

Over the years I have become reluctant to give out the specific body of water as to not offend others that may have this lake as there honey hole. Forest lake is of course a good fishing lake but I would look to some of the smaller lakes in the surrouning areas. There are a few that are excellent for eyes and limited fishing pressure.

Hmmm.....Limited white bass huh. I would still like to try....just to prove to myself. Where are the sandy flats?

Posted

The sand flat is mostly the saddle area's

I was out on Phalen last night from 5:30 to dark. Had one or two little bites, other than that we got nothing.

need a boat to get to the nice sand flats. The little doc is overly fished. Its only a bass and northern spot for me. I need to get a boat on Phalen and try the flats out.

Posted

This has probably been asked but can you bring a boat with a gas motor onto Phalen if you only use your electric trolling motors?

Posted

For any of the lakes were gas motors are prohibited(Phalen included) as long as you use only your trolling motor you are fine.

Try Powers Lake in Woodbury - Good Panfish and Bass small lake no boat launch.

North and South Section Shcool Lakes are good but no boat launching - really good Bass fishing averaging 3+ Lbs a cast...at least for me when last I fished there without knowing no boat lauching( 3yrs ago on conoe). I haven't fished it since, but I know Bass in there are huge because the land owners around the lakes does not like people launching and the bass keep growing.

East and West Boot Lake - small lakes good population of Bass panfish and Northerns. I cought my biggest northern out of East Boot Lake 7 yrs ago at 41" and have never been able to top that. Was up there recently about 3 weeks ago, Bass hitting crazy. A friend pulled 5lbs largemouth out of West boot.

Big Carnelian is also good.

All the lakes mentioned are in Washingto County. Close to home.

I was going to try Wabasso tonight. Has anyone heard if it's been any good?

Captain Hook,

I heard it is quite easy to land smithwick fishing crankbaits if you have patients and spend enough time in and around the boat. Make sure the hooks are sharp though so you get good penetration. If you want a quick release, barbless is the way to go, but if you feel like skipping work then make sure it is barbed and impales a bit in the meat of the limb.

(Inside joke fellas)

Let us know the results. Wabasso has nice panfish population, bass, and Pike. Hard lake for larger boats to fish. Very deep so look to the weed edges.

Posted

Was out for a few hours. Lots of small panfish. I tried a couple of top water lures and got some hits, but it looked to be the small sunnies again. Nothing big. Tried hitting some of the drops and nothing there. All were along the weeds. I got a 17' boat in there. Only about a foot and a half at the launch so you need to work it slow. Once in there it's deep though.

Posted

I was hoping to hear of monster bass, Pike, and crappie. I know the sunfish are small but some of the other fish are very nice in this deep pond

Posted

I'm going to go out after work and hit Owasso. Anyone know if anything is biting out there or what's working?

Posted

I have only been there in the spring or fall of the year. The lake has little pressure and good fish population. Good luck tonight and keep hydrated

My wife talked me into not going since it got so blasted hot out there. Probably wouldn't have been that enjoyable. I'll try it soon, but need to wait for the heat to go down a little.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
