Hello all. I am camping with my brother in law this weekend at Schroder Park on Cedar Lake. I have only fished this lake one other time. Any info on a walleye or crappie spot would be great. We caught a bunch of decent size sunfish and some pike last year, but would really like to catch some crappie and walleye. Thanks guys!!!

Coach, hope this will help your trip. For crappies I would suggest fishing during the early morning or late evening just outside the weedline (appx. 14 fow). If you have a depthfinder or flasher unit, you should try the sunken island in the southern bay (south of the bar) during the evening as well. Other than that, it is pretty much a hide and seek sort of thing.

I have only had limited success with walleyes on that lake but i would suggest trolling with Little Joes in 14 fow north of the bar. you'll have to sort out the northerns but you'll come across the occasional eye. grin.gif

Thanks for the info KDawg. Just to clarify, the sunken island you are talking about...is that the boomerang shaped one that tops out at about 17'???? Or when you say "bar" do you mean drinking establishment??? Thanks again. I will be sure to post my results on Monday!!

That's the one. I haven't fished it much but have had luck when I did for crappies and a few wandering eyes. The "Bar" is locally known more or less. As you head south from the campground, about 2/3 of the way down, there will be shallows with a bunch of coontails on it. That is the bar. wink.gif

Thanks for the info. We will be hitting it early in the am. I will let you know how we do.

Got out friday night. Started trolling Little Joes and plugs in 14 fow. Had a lot of northerns (2-3 lbs). Walter was bitting light and only got a visual whiff of one but were going after it. Finished up the evening by jigging for crappies. Got two good ones (11-12") and threw them back. Not enough for a meal. Otherwise a great night on the water.

Well I wish I had more to report, but the kids and the weather limited fishing time. My son got sick and my nieces were pretty demanding. We managed to catch some decent bluegills, but we never got a chance to fish the sunken island. We did hook into a couple of really nice fish just off a point on the south end. It drops off pretty quick there. We lost one and broke off on another, they were definetly nice fish. What is with the water? It looks like pea soup. Last year it was crystal clear when we were there. Thanks for the info KDAWG, good to see you had a good night on the water.

I've caught some walleyes sitting on the sunken island with lighted bobbers at night or trolling along the edge of that bar in the middle with Lindy's.

Whats the word been on Cedar lately? I have made it out a couple times the last week or so and did fair to decent while targeting bass. Been hitting the morning bite 6-9am and usually pick up 5-6 bass all in the 12-15 inch class. Largest bass so far for me out of Cedar was a 16.5 inch from under a dock on the north west part of the lake. No walleyes when I tried the sunken island with lighted bobbers and leeches. No walleyes when I pulled lindys and cranks in 10-18 fow down the east and west shorelines either. Anyone having any luck to speak of for Walleyes? I did pick up 4 or 5 smaller pike while pulling cranks and casting docks with spinnerbaits. Also, Carp and dogfish populations seem to be extremely high. Had three keeper sunnies on a stringer tied to our dock while fishing with my 3yo daughter. Heard some splashing from the sunnies & didn't really worry about it... A few mins later I go to add one to the stringer and one of the sunnies is bitten/torn in half.. A few mns later I see a dogfish swim about 10 feet away from the dock right near the surface. Also heard some kind of filter might be added to the southern bay by that inlet/runnoff that enters Cedar from Swartout & Albion lakes. Anyone else hear about that or care to cherp in....?

Hey Fever-

Good to see you the other night. The filter thing is up for discussion I know they had a meeting last friday, the cleawater watershed district is the governing body. Not to be a doomsayer but the lake has gone through major changes with the carp and phosphates. I hope they do put in the filter the water is so dirty the weeds aren't even growing.

Maybe check crwd.org for info or to send a message.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
