I was out at Silver Lake yesterday. I go to launch my boat and the spots to park boat trailers were taken by NON boat users.. I mean, there is a FULL parking lot of open spaces and these guys are standing at the end of the boat launch, parked at the trailer spaces so that I can;t launch my boat and park it.. What to do in these situations? The guys looked at me as if they were suppose to go move their cars or something... Some people are just rude

our society is failing! people just don't seem to care anymore even some fish i catch seem to be frowning at me smile.gif

You are suppose to buy a bigger truck and drive the bleep over their cars. LOL grin.gif

haha... its a nice lake to fish thought... pulled a 4 pounder out of there the other day grin.gif

Keep the local police number in your cell phone the next time you go there. They don't seem to mind ticketing trailers parked in the wront area's, so I don't see why they would mind ticketing people parked in the trailer spaces.

I see the same thing on Christmas Lake. The carpoolers fill up the few spots that are available. I don't remember seeing a sign about trailer parking only, but there is a sign stating only one vehicle to a stall. That floors me. Let them park two to a spot to help keep a few spots open for things that are more important than work. smile.gif

That happens on The Mississpi River launch by the Ford dam all the time too. It is just one of my many pet peaves about inconsiterate people at boat launches. This is one of my favorites "OK honey you just hold the boat at the dock floating over the launch while I go take my sweet time parking the truck and using the porta john."

I just bought my first boat two weeks ago. Tried Silver lake twice now and only small sunnies. I've trolled the 20' hole and had a couple of good hits. Any pointers for this lake? I had a problem with the parking there also, just no concern for others anymore.

i got yelled at the other day because I was waiting in line at a launch....and i was ready to launch...and i was about third in line....well i'm sitting in my truck waiting to launch...and both launch stalls become open and all the people in the vehicles in front of me are outside messing with their boats and their fishing gear, etc....so I waited for a minute...nothing....so i pulled out of line and around them...and launched my boat in about 10 seconds...and my buddy pulled my truck away and parked it...and i drifted well off to the side and waited for him...leaving both launch stalls open again. Apparently I was an A-hole for not waiting until everyone got their $hit together. I say they were A-holes for not being ready and still getting in line to launch their boat. Whatever...it didn't ruin my fishing.

My thought is that the ramp is for buisness only, you should not be on it or blocking it unless you are physically launching or loading the boat, none of this loading the cooler and skis from the truck to the boat, or taking off the cover, or using the dock space above the ramp to leave your boat. Get the kids, and dog out of the way, back it in, (un)load the boat, get off and out of the way. Thank you for allowing me to vent.

FL,

You handled it just right. Way too many people at the ramp think that because they pay taxes, they are entitled to unlimited time on the ramp.

If someone pulls up behind me in line while I am taking the straps off and putting cooler and such in the boat, I will always wave them ahead of me if they are ready to go. It is just common courtesy.

Just a quick question, how hostile are people going to be towards me when I show up solo to unload my boat?

Posted

Probably as made as some get at me when I am launching and loading my boat by myself. I figure if they aren't going to offer some help they can shut their mouth.

As long as you are launching your boat as efficiently as possible and look like you're making the effort to do so (this also means getting your boat out of the way if possible so other boats can launch or load up while you park your truck)...then anyone who has issues with that is not worth their weight in sinkers and are just looking for something to complain about anyways. I launch my boat alone all the time...you just got to move quick, but safe, and that's all you can do...I would never let it keep me from going fishing or boating. Just my two cents and I'm guessing that's how must common folk think.

The majority of people at the launch have enough patience to understand the difficulities that can present themself when loading/unloading solo. Many will even offer a hand. As for the rest, their the same folks that'll use the near side of the double wide ramp when the far side is empty, just because they think they have "the right". Eventually nature will weed these people out of society.

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one having the issue shocked.gif with people not moving out of the way so people can launch

The 20's hole is good for Walleyes.

That lake is stocked with Muskies. From the boat launch, you can fish that area to the right for northerns and bass. Fish the shore lines there for bass and then go towards the fishing dock for more muskies and northerns

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
