I was just stating what I have seen driving on hwy 89 since I was a young boy. Ogema, you have a good attitude and I commend you for that. I don't fault those people for selling fish along side the road. If you read my post through I did state the facts which I saw first hand. A large box of dead waterfowl will still be there if and when they set the nets again. I assume the rough fish were probably sheepshead/drum. I was stating the point that I believe it is easier to be unethical when money is involved. With that said I think with proper and diligent enforcement these type of things can be controlled with the exception of non-target species ending up in nets.I also think that the band could be more profitable opening the lower lake top sport fishing. I think with the right rules and control the effect on the resource would be less with sport fishing than commercial fishing. I understand the band wants to keep its way of life {and I can't blame them}but if you really want to bring the res. economy up that is one way.If you think about they have been logging that area for years another renewable resource. The lake is great resource that your forefathers were wise to reserve. If it is used properly in the future it will last for generations. Netting is harvesting only.Part of forestry is replanting. If the lake is "replanted" we then have a renewable resource. If the lake is allowed a sustainable harvest the resource will be preserved. I'm impressed that the band and the MN DNR are working together for the same cause. Catch and release or minimal harvest sport fishing puts the least amount of strain on the resource. If the band would allow this they could allow as much pressure as they wanted possibly a permit system like the boundry waters. There would be opportunities for guiding, lodgingetc. If you look URL and what the crappie boom did to revive that area in a short time its a great example. This is an issue with many opinions those are a few of mine.

For the first sentence, yeah it is way more easier to become unethical when money is involved, Jack Abramhoff is a perfect example of this.

As far as the way of life, I been thinking about netting and when I think hard, (these are my thoughts only) I dont think nettin was actually a way of life for us. Spearing was, and still is, I have never seen bigger northern pike anywhere in my life, than what I have seen around here.

Commercial fishing and the fishery, and the idea of selling fish, was introduced to us during WW1, to ease wartime rations. It was also one of the only ways to make money around here in the early days there wasn't much for jobs around here.

It became a part of our way of life since then, yes. There is big opportunity with the lake, however some people could care less about making a ton of money. It may seem amazing, but it is true, not everyone is intersted in making riches( I for one am not one of them... cool.gif)

For some people just the basic necessities is enough.

This perty much sums it up for me.

An old Indian chief sat in his hut on the reservation smoking a Ceremonial pipe and eyeing two U.S. government officials sent to interview him in 1951.

"Chief Two Eagles" asked one official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, "Considering all the events during the years, what is your opinion of the white man?"

The old Chief calmly replied....

"When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty buffalo, Plenty beaver, Women did all the work, Medicine man free,

Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing. All night having sex."

"Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that." grin.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
