Anyone with a report in the Red Wing area? I am going home this weekend to visit the folks and just curious if more birds have moved into the area. Any info would be great!

Even as far south as we are, we're seeing lessers in large groups. Introduced them to an out of state guy who'd never shot a goose before this AM. He shot 2 and now he's hooked. Moi? I shot like crap today, out of position, a little too patient, but on purpose. I wanted him to get the best shots and he did. Plenty of opportunities for me as the season wears on. Lots of mallards and teal flying around this morning but not coming in close on such a bluebird day. cool.gif

RiverRat,

Did you hunt the Gibbon area? If so, how'd you do? I was thinking about heading that way this coming weekend to hunt Swan Lake.

TIA for any info.

For ducks not really, I mostly hunt between New Ulm and Hanska, one morning I hunted a slough by Courtland, there was lots of shooting on Swan, but thats on the opposite side of what you would be looking at.

Saturday morning, I found myself in the blind in NW Minnesota with a college friend who has not hunted ducks in over 10 years. I tried to downplay the hunt and lower his expectations so he would not be disappointed in case the ducks weren't moving. I could guarantee him that we would have a good time, but actually shooting ducks I couldn't guarantee.

Well... I must have won the lottery because I have never seen as many Ringbills as I did Saturday morning in a long time. His first hunt in many years turned out to be a good one. From the minute we got our dekes set and legal shooting time rolled around, we were being buzzed by flocks. Flocks coming from the left, from the right, overhead, straight in, it was unreal. I sat back in amazement watching the activity of these little fighter jets tearing across the marsh. Its something else to watch and listen to 30-40 bills dropping and flipping down from way up while banking into the corner of your decoys. I know he was truly impressed.

There were more than a few occasions I was asked, "How come we didn't shoot at those?" I just responded that I like to watch them. grin.gif Honestly, I don't know. Sometimes the activity gets so overwhelming that you just sit back in amazement and forget about shooting sometimes.

We ended up shooting 5 Saturday along with a lone drake Mallard but let so many other birds fly, it isn't even funny.

The mallard was a nice bonus, considering that was the only mallard we saw all morning. The few times I've been out hunting this year, I haven't seen the numbers of mallards I've seen in the past. I find this a little strange but we also haven't had any big weather systems or cold temperatures up north yet either. The mallards must all be hanging out in Canada still.

Sunday morning was a different story. The birds were gone. We had small flocks working but it was a pretty big letdown after the show we experienced on Saturday.

Was out Saturday. We kicked lots and lots of geese off the water when we made out way back into the marsh. It was looking pretty promising till the sun came up. After that there wasn't hardly a bird in the sky. We seen very few ducks. Pretty much all the locals are gone and I don't think any of the northern birds have come down yet. My dad took a walk in the same area this morning and said it was the same as Saturday. Lots of geese and no ducks. Hopefully a good cold snap will bring them down...

My worst season ever for birds in hand.

Friday we made a trek out to west central MN. Shot one drake greenwing.

Saturday I shot a single ringneck in the Battle Lake area.

Man, nothing to speak of for birds flying.

Next weekend might be spent entirely in the bowstand.

Had real poor hunting in minnesota river bottoms this weekend, 2 woodducks for the whole weekend, seen maybe 20 ducks for 2 days, worst weekend of season so far.

ChuckN and I had a pretty good shoot on Saturday in Ottertail County. Two green wings, one 'bill, one ring neck, one goldeneye, and one hoody. We also saw good number of ring necks, some 'bills, a few mallards and gadwalls, and one flock of cans.

I sent the wife out on Sunday morning, and they got zippo. What a difference a day makes.

Hunted near Dent and shot 10 for three days for 2 guys. Saw only a few flocks of bluebills and cans. Shot 1 woodie, 1 gadwall, 2 bluebills, 1 mallard, 1 ringer and 4 cans. The fishing was great tho.

Why do people see the need to set up 100 yards from you when there is plenty of room on the slough? Blows my mind, these guys knew where we where and they where nice and quiet setting up so we wouldn't know where they where.

Not to mention they left there trucks right there at the landing when they seen our trucks parked up the hill, where you SHOULD PARK.

They proceeded to high ball every flock we had working us and then no one got a shot at the birds.

People need to pull there heads out.

We where the only two groups on the slough.

Weekend could have been better if we where not so picky.

Lots of birds around. Bluebills, ring bill, gaddies, mallards and a ton of geese.

Had a flock of ringers come in and 5 stayed with us on sunday.

Friday we watched hundreds of divers pile into the north end of the lake and of course we where on the SW end of the lake. O'well still fun.

SW corner of the state has a lot of birds right now. you just have to look for them.

Sat in the slough yesterday with an old friend and his 3 year old lab. Cold, windy, wet and miserable. Nothing flying except the BS. Maybe next weekend. Always good to see my old buddy again and the dog entertained us by trying to retrieve the decoys.

Sat we saw penty of birds...ringbills, redheads...cans...woodies and mallards. None of them would decoy. The main reason...thousands of coots. every bird dropped right into the coots!! Frustrating, is there anything one can do about that? I went somewhere else on Sun....got 1 mall, should've been more but wasn't paying attention! Oh well.

Yes there is a major coot flight this year. Southern Mn. has not filled up with mallards yet. Lots of gwt coming through and the woodies a filtering down on there way out of the state. Nice weather for the rest of the week isn`t helping things much but we still have time and lots of honkers around. Have not seen a diver as of sunday. Flip

I was up to the Bovey area last weekend, saw 4 geese, no ducks. Seems all the locals are gone and the Canadians haven't dropped down yet.

Question for ya'll, with this warm weather coming in this weekend, would it be worth it to go back up north or just take my Dad pheasant hunting?

seems like most of the locals have moved out, the geese are feeding in select fields within city limits and returning to the "'fuge" in Sartell/St.Cloud unharmed, and the northern birds have yet to trickle into the area. Hunted solo Tuesday morning and saw one bluebill early on and one goose at sunrise. The goose locked on the diver dekes I had out and then finished when he saw the 3 goose full bodies on shore. Glad to get a little shooting (one shot) and a goose to bring home. Can't wait for the weekend...ducks/geese and roosters and of course a Halloween party to make getting up early on Sunday morning more interesting. Keep the reports coming!

A buddy and I were out in Berry / Beardsley area and LOTS & LOTS of birds in the area. We were out Fri / Sat / Sun.

Friday we got 7 ducks and 1 goose (4 bills, 1 blue, 1 teal, 1 can)

Saturday we got 7 again (3 greenheads, 3 Bills & 1 blue)

Sunday only got 1, it was really windy.

We are going back again and hopefully a cold snap brought some birds down from up North. Clouds and Clouds of geese flying. Not to mention a good amound of ducks too. We didn't hunt any fields for them.

Otter Tail County was hot this morning. Cans, ringers, 'bills and a ton of geese. I killed my two geese this morning and my wife killed her's tonight as they flew over the yard! Geese all over the place and enough ducks to keep me happy!

Hunted Pelican Lake near Monticello today and saw very few ducks and I only shot one green wing teal. I did not hear or see any geese. I guess I will need to hunt some place else this weekend.

It's been getting little slower in the fields I've been working in Southern MN. Seems a lot of the big flocks are grouped up more and they're a little harder to work in. Last few weeks I've been taking a few greenheads here and there out of some cut corn and bean fields.

Most of the local woodies seemed to have moved out with a few trickling through from up north.

Mallards are here in good #'s in the fields. The last week has provided great field hunting under some nice tornados of greenheads!

just checked the Ark. game and fish website (thier sat. mallard tracking site) It appears that the mallards are still far to the north. It's really hurting for mallards right now around trf.

Some mallards have moved in to the central MN areas. Many larger flocks flying around during the middle of the day. Just tough picking out the drakes in the low light.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
