I dont know where to begin on trying to point out spots on Basswood. I have fished it several times throughout the last 10 years and have never had a problem finding fish regardless of the season. There is endless obvious structure that all seems to hold fish. If your looking for the crappies it makes life a bit easier to pack in some fatheads. I use lots of Rapala's on Basswood .. dont be afraid to throw big baits .. they work well, especially in the fall.

If your a hunter be sure to bring the shotgun.. lots of grouse on the portages.

Nothing against grouse hunting, but you should check the regs -- I believe portages are off limits for hunting in the BWCAW

You dont shoot on the portages ( common sense and serious safety issue to portagers in particular ). You take the birds in the woods to the side of the portages. This is a very common practice in the BWCA. Walking the portages is a good way to get easy walking, good views of your surroundings without walking aimlessly in the woods getting lost. Hunters of all types including moose hunters use the portages for hunting purposes.

If others are out there hunting please use common sense on the portages .. I have never heard of any injuries but we dont need to start.

Ok,I'll take the shotgun. But you know the best thing that goes with fresh grouse ,cooked over an open fire?Walleye,so how about some colors of crankbaits, and some depths to start with.(also crappies)Thanks for the help.Be there in 4 days.

There is some really good fishing off of Caribou Point and up through the Louis Narrows. I was there this summer and we caught quite a few walleyes and smallmouth. There is a really nice campsite just outside of Hidden bay that is located up on a bluff. The view is tough to beat. I would say that this time of year a jig and minnow would be tough to beat. We had really good luck using Northland Fireball jigs.

Good Luck

Goose slayer ..

I agree with walleye going with the grouse...

Last time I was there I couldnt keep enough gold shad raps in the #5 & #7 sizes .. deep runners mainly. The natural shad pattern was 2nd best .. but was a far 2nd .. gold was hot.

Have a great trip !
