Night Bite Report

We didn't mark a lot of baitfish either, but know they were there as the walleyes were there. We did mark some clouds high on the graph and I'm not sure if those were tulibee or just interference. Were you on Indian Point or fishing south of there?

No hot bait, just mixed it up alittle. As far as the hot spot we cought fish all over 7-9ft I marked tons of fish in 9.5 with no weeds around but could not get those to bite. Wish I had some jigs and minnows with. forgot 40+-.5 temp

18 inch, unfortunatley I didn't catch you sooner as I ended up going solo last minute that night by the grace of my wife. Al Linder LOL! Not even close. Just got lucky. It's been a tough year.

Is anybody headed up this weekend? I think I'm going on Friday night. I haven't checked the weather yet, but I'm hoping for a little wind and not too cold! My goal is to get out three more times before ice....We may be fishing into December!

Hey, DHenry sorry I didn't get back to you on what I was using on that special night. Some things I just don't want to give up on the forum.

Not sure if we are heading up or not yet.

No problem, I've been a frequent reader on the forum, but haven't participated much here so I completely understand. We've probably run into each other at the ramp or on the lake. I've got a silver tahoe and an trophy 170 alumacraft. I'm a tall blonde guy usually wearing a packer hat while I'm fishing.

Was up last night from 6 until a bit past midnight. Action was slow but did manage four fish. A 21", 23", 26-1/2" and a hefty 27-1/2" that was probably pushing 8-1/2 lbs. All the fish bit different lures and/or colors. The lures that did produce were Rogues and Bombers. Hopefully I'll be getting out some more near the full moon.

DHenry, I'm sure we crossed paths. I am parked for the season, but may get up again with a buddy one more time. I run a Black Dakota Quad and a Black Lund Angler SS.

Houseboat, did you get the water temps? I heard that the temps actually rose the last couple days. Add no wind and you had some tough conditions. Nice to see you pulled a few out. Thanks for the report.

Was out Saturday night. Got five fish (20"-24.5") in the Garrison area all on clown HJ12, .9-1.1 mph. Four of those five were landed within 30 minutes of each other just as the clouds were thinning and the moon was starting to shine through. After the moon came out for good I lost the bite so I went to Indian Point. Hooked and lost something huge (again) and landed three more, 25.5", 27.5", 28.5." All on Tennessee Shad HJ12. Several other boats were out there and they were catching fish too.

I was out last Thursday as well and can confirm that the water was warmer. I had from 40.3 to 41.7. Unfortunately I did not start fishing until 9 & spent 4 hours without a fish on the calm sea. I'll be back up this week when there is a little wind.

Was also out on Indian Point on Saturday night. We caught three fish with a 28" and 29" fish. All were caught on a HJ firetiger colored with a red permanent marker. I think others had better luck as I saw a lot of fish caught especially while it was cloudy. I tried a lot of different colors and saw a lot of fish caught before we caught our first fish. There was a good chop, but quite a few boats all fishing the same shallow water which probably drove some of the fish away. We didn't fish the bay in front of the casino at all. Has anyone had luck in the bay the last couple of weeks. Hoping to get out a couple of more times before it freezes.

Good luck guys, nice reports! Have the fish started to lose their fight yet? This will happen soon as the water continues to cool. Just a word of caution out there. The water is dangerous right now. That last trip out I was hanging out over my big motor as my line was caught on the prop. I had taken off my lifejacket earlier. Thinking back, that wasn't very smart on my part! blush.gif

SM you out there? Give me a holler. I have been given a "passing grade" and am free to fish. grin.gif

Sounds good Guys, 3 in a boat will be fun, but four is a too much when it is this cold. If everybody wants to go we can take 2 boats and hunt in a pack. Anyway things are slipping fast. I was the only boat out last night and had to come through some shore ice to get back to the landing. When this starts to happen you know there is not much time left. I think fishing open water fishing is about done for the season.

Did you catch anything last night? I'm planning to go out tonight. I just have to do some calling and find out the best place to launch.

Went fishing Wed. before Thanksgiving, fished until about 1am. Caught four between 23" and 24" with one 31" pike. Lots of shore line ice in the protected bays and most shallow areas. Water was 37.5 deg. when I left. I think that was the last trip unless we get a weather miracle.

Went last night and fished Indian Point from 5:30 until 10:30. Was calm when we started and had some pretty good waves by the end of the night. We launched from the public launch north of the casino....A couple of other boats broke through the ice that was at the launch. We caught four fish...a 7 lb 25" fish, two 27", and a 28 1/4....Think this was the last boat trip for me until next spring.

Good man Dhenry! Nice to see you made it out.

I'm sad to see the open water go. Moment of silence....Okay, now it's time to make some ice! I think Santa's gonna bring me a new MMC chip or underwater camera. grin.gif

Me and SM River Rat were in one boat on Indian Point and a couple of friends were in the other boat.We had to break up about 1/2 inch of ice at the landing to get out but wasnt bad.Fishing was slow for us too, a 21 1/2 and a 26 1/4 for our boat and a 26 for the other boat.Probably going to be the last trip out but I said that a week ago.

We were relieved to see the ice broken when we got to the ramp although there is some fun in the challenge of having to break out of the bay to get to open water. Sorry for some of the close encounters on Sunday night....the waves coming from the north made it a little tought to stay on line. We were actually planning to leave the pond at 10:00 as well and had a fish on at about 9:55 which we lost and then caught two more and left at approx. 10:30. I'm wondering with the weather we are having will there be open water this weekend?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
