Night Bite Report

Cyberfish, nice talking with you. Mr Pike and I lived and died in the weeds, why, I assume it's from the lack of sleep. After reading my notes over the last few years, I should have changed my game plan and hit the rocks. This time of year most all of my big fish come off the rocks. The only 2 hits in the bay came undone for us. One fish hit with my rod in the holder, never had a chance to dial it in.

SM, I called you twice last nice and got your voicemail. The tulie bite should just be getting underway and these fish are usually the biggest in the lake. I am game to head up again as soon as you are ready!

I kept the boat out one more weekend. We fished from the Garrison ramp down to Terry's and back Saturday night and caught two 19's just south of the ramp. Missed three or four more. Caught the first one on a chartruese/red head thunderstick and got the second on a #13 clown husky jerk.

That's it for this year. Now I can spend my time organizing my tackle box for next year.

Fished Sat. night, by myself, and started at the Casino. Caught a 27.5" fish on the first pass at approx. 5:20 and then a couple of slot fish at approx. 7:00. With what I thought was a slow start, I then headed to the weeds south of Pike's Point and fished for about 2 1/2 hrs. without a bite. Headed back to the Casino in some tough wind and caught a 14" on my first pass and made a couple other passes without any luck and called it a night. The wind and waves made it tough going getting to the ramp given the shallow water in front of the access. Caught all my fish on 10 HJ's....3 on the glass perch and one on firetiger. I thought it was going to be a good night after catching a big fish early and seeing another one caught near me as well. I'm not sure what shut them down. It was a good night to be on the water until the wind whipped up.

Was out Monday night solo on the west side, not another boat in sight. The 1st fish of the night was a 29" northern at about 5:30. Between 6:00 and 6:30, I caught a 21.5, a 22,5 and a 24 then nothing until 9:30 when I landed a 26.5. I ended the night with a 16 at 11:00, then I headed for home.

The water temp was 44 degrees.

SM, good to see you made it out and got a few. Are you planning on this weekend at all? I'm booked until Friday night. I'll give you a call. I haven't gotten my 30" yet!

I think I may be headed up on Friday night. Is anyone else planning on going up? I haven't hit Indian Point in a while and thought if the bay wasn't hot that I'd move to the rocks in a hurry. Are the tulibees spawning yet. River Rat, what was your hot bait for the night?

I plan on being out there Friday night. White Lund PS 1675/Yam 115. Might go east, but I haven't seen any reports from the east for a while.

Made it out last night fish the nw corner by garrison. Fishing was pretty good on numbers and a few real nice fish as well. We were the only boat out. Still catching my fish on shallow shads in the weeds.

Bigeyes, was the bite consistent or was it off and on? What was your hot color? Was any spot better than another?

I haven't been north of Pike's at all yet this year!

Bite was pretty consistent as it has been in that area for several weeks now. Hi Brian, no it was not me last Thursday, and I would love to go fishing but can't. Gotta go try to get a buck this weekend. Maybe sometime next week.

Crappie, if you have an open seat and wouldn't mind some company, I'd be willing.

I still have the bug even though I winterized my boat.

If you are interested, give me an email.

Thanks

Which areas have you had your best luck? I have fished the bay in front of the casino and the weedline south of Pike's Point pretty hard and generally one or the other has been producing some fish. Like I said earlier, I think I'm going to try to get out to Indian Point this weekend to fish some rock.

Went out Friday evening. Got six eyes (19"-24.5") up by Garrison. HJ-10 green over orange (metallic) was the bait that got most fish but FT and blue over orange got some hits. 1.1 mph was way better that 1.5 mph for us. Other boats around us were going faster than us, though. Finished the night on Indian Point. Hooked and lost something big out there but soon after the breeze and the 16 degree temps got to us and we called it a night. Can't wait until next week.

Sounds like the bite is still on! I hope this warm weather holds, I would like to be up there for the november full moon when the tulibees are spawning trolling huge raps for big fat tulibee stuffed eyes and skis!

Hit the pond Saturday evening....great night to be on the water with o.k. temps a good chop with a south wind and an awesome northern lights show. We started off at 5:30 and went for an hour with no bites and then changed spots. We ended the night with nine walleyes and a 38" northern. The unique thing about the night was no slot fish. All the Walleyes were in excess of 25" with five going over the 27" mark and the biggest being 28 1/4". HJ 10's and 12's in firetiger and clown were the hot baits.

The big fish are there if you can find a spot with no pressure and stay quiet. If your serious about big fish I recommend to finding a spot that isn't covered with boats, especially this year when there still plenty of feed. 2 guys in one good spot from 8-1am 21 eye's, 6 at 28 and over with the biggest at 29.5 and one sumo pike that went over my 3 foot ruler. The rest were 23-27. The big fish are there but will not stick around if your running over them with your motor. I was running BIG baits, yes finally, Super Rouges and 14's.

Good luck to you diehards out there.

I think I'm using 20lb stealth at 6lb diameter. My buddy was using 30lb fireline. We are running the lures 90'-120' back.

Mykal, that is a great night. How deep were your fish? I've never run 14's. How far are you getting the big baits back. What night were you out?

For those of you who don't know Mike he really knows his stuff and will always give you an honest report. He really let the cat out of the bag on this one, and if your reading the report I would plan on taking full advantage of what he is telling you and darn soon too! There are a lot of BIG secrets on Milly and you'd be wise to remember this one. Mike how does it feel to know that your top 5 fish would win pwt Lake Erie almost every year!

Thanks for the kind words bigeyes but I have much to learn. I was down 6 fish to the other guy before I even got to the spot. He had the top 2 biggest fish before I got there. My 2 biggest of the night were 28's with the last one the fattest 'eye I have seen to date. Made my 29.75 'eye this summer look like a stick. I also landed the sumo pike. We happen to be in the right spot at the right time and dialed it in.

I was in one of those boat going faster. You had much better luck than we did-one snagged tulibee. Were you in the white Lund. We tried deeper, shallow, but not that slow.

Went out last night. We did not catch 21 fish like "Al Linder" Myakl. But did pull some nice fish like this one. The only ones on the lake,as far as we could see was about 2 feet. With the fog you could be 5 feet from a light on shore and not see it. And the 30 mph drive home was fun to.

Hey, 18" Crappie, where did you guys fish last night and what was your hot bait? I think I'm going to be up on Friday night. I'm also a little nervous about the fog situation with the warm weather. Also, what was the water temperature?

We went out last night and got skunked. Had one nice fish on. It was the only hit of the night. Also was surprised not to mark any baitfish either, Thought the tullibees would be up. We had 39+ degrees all night, Fog was very thick. Talk to another guy and he popped one 27.7" fish. Pretty slow south of indian point.

We sere able to grab a good amount of crappies and bass but not much for walleye. That being said, always sad to leave the lake for the season but we'll be back eventually.

On the south end...  Fall walleye fishing is in full swing on Lake of the Woods.  Some excellent reports this week with an increase of fish along the south shore and an increase in anglers catching them via jigging, however spinners and crankbaits are still working well.   Anchored up or spot locked and jigging over the side of the boat is an effective fall method.  Using gold, pink, glow, orange and chartreuse colored jigs tipped with a frozen emerald shiner is hard to beat.   Spinners with crawlers or minnows and trolling crankbaits are still producing fish and is an effective way to put your baits in front of many fish, some of which will typically react.   With literally millions of walleyes in Lake of the Woods, not every walleye is focusing on the same forage in the same area.  Walleyes are being caught at many locations around the lake, including deep mud, reefs, shorelines and transition areas (rock to mud, mud to sand).   Most fish are being caught in 18 - 32 feet, depending upon where you are fishing.  Don't forget about the morning / evening bite along the shoreline areas.     Big pike, jumbo perch, a few crappies and an occasional sturgeon in the mix of walleyes and saugers throughout a day of fishing.   On the Rainy River...   Some shiners have started to run up the Rainy River.  There have been good fishing reports with fish being caught, but it isn't the heavy fall run yet.  The walleye fishing isn't a slamfest yet, but there are definitely some nice fish to be had.   Jigging is becoming more effective with water temps in the low 60's.  This technique will only get better as the fall continues.  Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits continues to be effective as well.      Walleyes continue to be caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river.     Pike and smallmouth bass are hanging out on shorelines, in bays and areas with rock.  Some nice crappies being caught around docks and off of breaks. Fall sturgeon fishing is normally very good in the fall and is overshadowed by the walleye run!  The sturgeon season is open through the winter into the spring. Up at the NW Angle...  Walleye fishing up at the Angle continues good.  Limits of walleyes are being caught on both sides of the border.   Walleyes are hanging out on points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current.  They are being caught jigging, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  All three methods are catching fish.   As a rule of thumb, jig over structure, pull spinners or cranks to cover water along a shoreline, on a flat or to find fish.   Crappies are in 20 - 30 feet off of points and around brush piles. Electronics help to find, and stay on the schools of fish. Muskies continue to be active.  Big pike are in abundance and snappin'.  Smallmouth bass are active with cooling water temps.

Back when the DNR was seining our beach in July I asked, and apparently they were through oak narrows.   But long way to go to get to us.   I'll keep my eyes open and my mask and snorkel on.  Didn't see any sign off them this summer.

Nice job Troy.   We are happy with our opening day for ducks.  2 man limit of mixed species by 10am.  LOTS of people where we were today but that was expected.  Other than getting beat to our spot, no issues that would keep up away.  Not even the rain.

Thanks, I'm riding this now TW200 so not sure I can get on any of the ATV trails. Might have to sled by in the winter! 👍

There are actually 3 tree carvings on the trail from Soudan to Ely.  I saw 2 of them but missed the 3rd.  I believe that trail is the Prospector Trail #4 or #6.  You have to start from the parking lot on the Murray Road 2 miles past Soudan since several property owners on the old railroad bed didn't allow off-road vehicles on their properties.  Another option is to travel from Tower to Embarrass then on to Ely, but that adds a couple hours to the trip.

I've seen that caving on a few web pages. What trail is that on?  It would be cool to ride by. 👍
