metrojoe,

Was that you in the red truck on the other side of us? I saw BDR talking with you if it was but I didn't know who you were. I appologize if it was, it would have been nice to chat a bit.

I took my dad out there on Sunday and we caught quite a few pannies. We got three crappies over 10 inches and three that were about 9 inches. We also landed a stack of gills and a few of them were pretty decent. My dad brought home a nice meal of crappies and sunfish for him and my mom. Fishing was fast and furious and there were several keeper sized gills mixed in throughout the couple hours we were out there. They were pretty finicky though on occasion and the bigger fish would just barely take the bait. I had on a sping bobber in order to detect some of the bites. The smaller fish were like kamikazes and would just dive bomb the bait, but the bigger fish were much less eager to bite.

We also watched a few pike swim by on the underwater camera too, one that I guessed to be 7-8 pounds...

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

OK Here's my plan of attack for Sat. Pick up bait at fish lake bait or Rush point. Waxies, Euro's, Fatheads, and a few Shiners or Medium sucker(depending on the size, I just know when I see them). I do not plan to fish Walleye's out there Saturday. There are numeous spots to find Crappie out there. You can go to any of the community hole and do ok if you can move around and find the schools. I will look to the e side of Crane Island 28-35fow. Striaght in to the island 15-22fow is a decent spot to put out a tip up with a medium shiner for a walleye/pike. Also for Walleye there are alot of steep banks around Wilson Island, I try to stick to 15-22 FOW for eye's. Just North of the public launch is a shallow weedy area between Braham Island and shore. This can be a very good area for pike and gills. Look in the weeds for the gills. down on the North end the is a fairly gradual sloping flat, there is also a inlet to the back waters and Patterson park, this area is good for pike and gills.

I am sure all this will change after I get out prefishing this week grin.gif Anyone want to fish Friday? I should be out there with my Dad.

Nels- I will be staying the night up there without internet. There is virtually no snow and with the temps there will be no slush. Vehicles of all kinds should have no problem. Ice is smooth and very slick I suggest cleats for all. I have seen many spills in the last week on lakes.

To say I had fun on Saturday would be an understatement! The weather was incredible, the company was awesome, and the fishing was good!

I spent the day fishing with a group of boy scouts, and let me tell you, these kids are well on their way to becoming pro fishermen! smile.gif (Look for the recap on the Ice Fishing Main Forum)

I had to opportunity to see several nice fish come through the ice and the opportunity to share a few laughs on Saturday.

A big congrats to Brian Randow! That pike was amazing! I saw Brian land that monster and I told him to hop in my truck so we can get it to the weigh-in and back in the water. The warm weather definitely was a plus and the fish swam away like new. A 14.1 pound pike!...

I'm with Dennis, a big thank to all the ICE Pro Staff!

Another HUGE thank you goes out to Dennis Steele. Dennis worked very, very hard and making sure everything was running on all cylinders for the ICE Series. Some long nights for Dennis and a big part of the success of the ICE Series in contributed to him. So a big THANK YOU Dennis!

There's still a lot of ice fishing left this season and I hope to see some of you on the ice!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
