Suggestions for baits to bring!

Recommended Posts

I will be making my first winter trip to Mille Lacs in about 3 weeks and i need some good advice on what baits to bring with me or what i need to buy. Being from Indiana and basically only fish for panfish, iwould like to have a list on what would typically be good for walleyes and perch, or I guess what else would hitting this time of year.

Thanks in advance!!!!! confused.gifconfused.gif

1) Shiners

2) Fatheads

3) Crappie Minnows

4) Waxworms

5) Eurolarvae

I gave up fishing for walleyes during the daytime last winter and stuck to using Eurolarvae for perch. I still caught the occasional walleye using larvae.

Sunrise and Sunset we usually jigged with a fathead minnow head and a shiner under a bobber on the other line.

During prime time split your holes with equal parts of jigging spoons and set lines. Throw a mix of fatheads and shiners down on the set lines. Use rattling forage minoows and Angel eyes tipped with a minnow head on the other lines. If you have room for more lines throw a tipup outside with a shiner set a foot off the bottom.

During the day keep your set lines with the same bait. Jig your other holes with waxies or eurolarvae and a small teardrop.

Good luck.

Swedish pimple, size 3, silver chartruese, hammered silver or gold work great for walleyes and perch. Tip it with a minnow head or tail. I never change all day catch perch in the day, walleyes at night with same bait.

Jigging spoons and jigging raps and for a dead stick some plain and colored (red being my favorite) #4 hooks under a slip bobber.Line I either use power pro #10-#2 diameter or #6 mono.Where do you plan on fishing on the lake?

You can also fish for some pike with tip ups during the day.

I usually put a set line with a red jig and fathead or red hook and fathead next to my hole im jigging with the swedish pimple. Sometimes they dont like the spoon but they are drawn in by it. Then they will hit the set line. When you are jigging a swedish pimple pause for a good 15 seconds every once in a while then give it a little quiver. just make that teaser and the spoon dance a little, then let it sit for a couple more seconds. When you vibrate the spoon after jigging it then let it sit the fish will hit when its not moving. They seem to love it when you quiver the spoon. Dont expect to catch too many walleyes in the day. You catch the majority of walleyes in Mille Lacs at night. I usually start jigging for walleyes at 4 and stop at about 8 or 9 but you can catch walleyes all night. Iv woken up to rattle reels many times at 2-3 in the morning and caught a nice walleye. Or sometimes in the middle of the night iv put down my jigging spoon and caught 2-3 walleyes when the rattle reels dident produce a fish all night. I usually use 6 pound test but you could get away with 4 pound. I would buy a couple of swedish pimples though. They work great on mille lacs, iv taken almost all of my walleyes in my life ice fishing with a swedish pimple. Iv used Go-Devils and weasels and buck shot rattle spoons and never catch as many fish.

Mousies, Maggots, Euro Larve. How ever you say it.

We were up from Sunday to Sunday. Jiggin with Mousies on a silver or gold spoon was by far the most effective presentation for our crew. The walleyes are plump and beautiful.

Good Luck...

forget about being real specific with your bait, everyone has their favorite! just fish the flats by day and the shallow rocks by night. and you'll catch at least a couple eyes. just stop in at a local bait store and they should tell you what is working. Try garrison sports, this guy owns a launch and is a avid fisherman, he's helped me find fish more than once. good luck
