Upland Jackets

The Yeti

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I've been looking for a good quality, upland jacket, tan and blaze with a zip out liner. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either.

Couple years ago I bought one at Reeds. No zip out liner, but it has the zip off sleeves. That is a very nice feature that I have used frequently this year. I think I only paid around $80.

I second the Ptarmigans by Columbia. They are a bit pricey but, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Lots of stores are marking down their hunting cloths/jackets. Now's a good time to buy.

I agree... the Ptarmigans by Columbia.

I got one in the off season last year for almost half price. Arms zip off and there is a zip out liner and I even have a few other fleece jakets that will fit the zipper.

Joes has a bunch on sale, they have one with a zip out liner

for $80. It is not a columbia it is an off brand but it seemed real nice. It was a mtn prairie or something along those lines.

I bought a really nice one at Cabela's couple years ago for $100. Exactly as you described. It has a zip out lining, zip off coat arms and a zipper to access the game pouch. Best coat I have owned.

I have a Columbia and a Browning coat. Both are nice but do not compare to the one I got last year from Pella Products. It's called a Bird'n Lite and it has adjustable suspension straps that take the weight off of your shoulders. With a bad back I was usually pretty sore by days end, especially if I had anything in my game bag. Not anymore. I bought mine on-line but I know they have them at Scheels, not sure about Gander or Joes.

I personally have found a bird coat to be cumbersome and restrictive for me when it's full of stuff. I try to have all my gear except my shotgun supported by my legs/waist. I usually just use an insulated bird hunting shirt (got mine from LL Bean) and then layer as necessary with thermal underwear, cotton t-shirt, and a fine-knit turtleneck. Then I use a Bird Belt from Cabelas to carry my gear and a game bird strap to carry my birds. I can get my ammo, dog bell, gloves, stocking cap, rope lead, gps if grouse hunting, and water bottle in the Bird Belt. I have the game bird strap and my eCollar transmitter hanging off the belt holding my pants up. All my gear is then supported by my waist/legs and not my shoulders so I am less fatigued at the end of the day and I can move more freely when shooting. I can stay warm down to about 15 degrees with the insulated shirt and the various layers. A pair of Wick chaps helps keep my legs warm and protects from brush too. If it's colder than that, I wear the same setup and add a hooded orange sweatshirt which makes me good to about 0 degrees. If it's below zero then I either wuss-out or substitute the sweatshirt for a heavier coat.
