Just curious, I was on the DNR site looking at the listings of designated trout lakes to plan another adventure. What caught my eye was the listing of Alton Lake that was supposed to have a rainbow and lake trout fishery.

Yet, when I went to the DNR lake finder, there was mention of 1 brook trout that they seemed perplexed about. Also it mentioned of a rainbow fishery that was stocked, but it was stated "there appear to be few if any, of these fish (rainbows) remaining in the lake. And there was no mention of lake trout at all.

The information seems contradictory. Anyone have any real information?

The DNR sire is an excellent resource, but sometimes the fish information is not correct. One of my favorite trout lakes is listed on there as having caught one rainbow trout and a bunch of rock bass. Yet everytime I go there I catch trout all day, anywhere from 10 inches to 10 pounds. Maybe for whatever reason when the survey was done the fish were not near the nets. I just am not sure. But like I say, the DNR site is a great resource but not always %100 correct.

Long ago in the old days. Alton lake had a decent lake trout population. It is all but gone. The deepest part of the lake is on the north end by one of the portages. There are a few walleye spots on the lake. Years ago, the fishermen would take walleyes out of that lake by the boatload. Now, you work very hard to catch walleyes on alton lake. There is some decent northern and smalleyes on the lake sometimes. Its a very beautifull lake but not so hot for fishing any more. Too my knowledge, this lake is not stocked with stream trout, unless they started something new recently. the lake was overfished in the old days and now its just a very pretty regular lake. - northman

Thanks for the information, guys. Good to know. I've been there twice, and haven't seen a walleye, and didn't know about the trout, which seems not to be there. But the smallie fishing was very good.
