questions on oil

LaVoi

Question

I have two questions that are probably gonna sound pretty dumb, but I am a novice level mechanic. First question is can I use two-cycle outboard oil to mix with my gas for the ice auger or is this a big no-no. I was thinking as long as its two-cylce oil it should be fine but thought I better play it safe and ask someone who knows on here. Second question, what weight is used on changing the lower unit fluid. Have never done it before and could also use some tips as to how to perform this properly. Thanks for the help everybody.

As far as the oil I know there are rated different, one is for water cooled motors and one is for air cooled (auger). What the difference is I do not know. I prefer to use the small bottles of oil made for my auger, it is just easier to get the correct mix.

The gearlube, I am assuming that you are refering to your boat? Get a quart of gearlube and the pump. Remove the drain and vent plugs in the gearcase. Let it drain. Fill from the bottom hole until it comes out the top hole. I would also repalce the seals on the vent/drain plugs also.

When relubing the lower unit on my outboard motor I always had oil leakage around the prop, asked at the motor repair shop about this, answer was, the oil expands when it is warmed up, solution, he told me to fill the case from the bottom till it comes out the top hole, let some out to create a air space for expansion, put in the plug.never leaked again. hope this helps.

Lavoi - I think the outboard oil is rated to higher standards than aircooled motor oil and believe it has less ash content - maybe Surface Tension or sledhead can chime in for sure, but I've been using TWC-3 oil in all my two strokes - like you I hope I'm not wrong.... confused.gif

Thanks for the advice guys, I played it safe and bought the regular two cycle oil. But now I have one more question, I took the auger out for a test run as it was not cutting good most of last year. It is a 10" Jiffy with the single chipper blade. It has never cut quite like it should, and I replaced the blade last year but still didn't cut much better, I came to the conclusion that it must be the point that is bad. You almost have to lay on the thing to get it to cut and this takes a toll on the expensive blade. How do you sharpen the tip. I am pretty cautious about messing with it and risking losing the proper angle. Any advice, if I can't get this taken care I am going to have to get rid of it, it is only three years old and shouldn't be cutting like it's fifty years old.

If you go to jiffy's web site. There is a chart on how to sharpen your blades. I just take a file and run it across the blade, carefull to keep the same angle. You will need to do the tip also. I have drilled thousands of holes with mine and that is all I do a couple times a season.
