I ice fished Pokegama a number of times last winter and had an Aqua-Vu down most of the time. I got many "sniffers" that come in to my bait interested, and eyball things for a bit, and then lose interest and wander off. I tried many presentation changes from jigging technique to different lures, but not much changed, and the walleyes seemed to do the same thing. I started thinking that with the clear water, are the fish line shy? I am planning on switching to fluorocarbon line this year on Poke, but does anyone else have any feedback as to what they know, and if they feel the same way I do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'VE HAD GOOD LUCK ON POKE EARLY SEASON WITH PLAIN OL' 6LB

TRILENE XT.I MAINLY USED JIGGING SPOONS WITH A SHINER HEAD AND FISHED AT THE BASE OF STEP DROPOFFS (30FT PLUS),MAYBE THE DEEP WATER DIDN'T CAUSE THEM TO BE AS LINE SHY.THE BIGGEST I CAUGHT WAS 30.5 INCHES AND WEIGHED 9LBS 2OZS.BEST TIME WAS THE FINAL HOUR AT TWILIGHT AND ALSO NOTICED THAT THE ACTION SLOWED MORE BY THE DAY AS THE SEASON WORE ON.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU .GOOD LUCK.

Hey Salmi,

I would have to agree that a guy wouldn't want to go heavier than 6lb test out on Pokegama. At least that's been my experience the few times I've ice fished it. Pokeg just froze over around the Tioga Bay access and Salter Bay area last night. So it'll be a few days to a week before I go venturing out there. The only decision then will be walleyes or spearing northerns?

When you can;t get the eyes bite on live minnows try fishing with dead minnows, works sometimes.

Do you guys fish the Wendigo arm at all. A few of my buddies say it can be decent at times. I haven't been on the lake. Could anyone point me in the right direction on places to start? Is the island the best place to start?

WalleyeSnob,

A good place to start is the expansive flats to the Northwest of the islands. Look for about 7-10 feet of water. I have little knowledge of Wendigo. Although a neighbor of mine speaks highly of it.

I am also new to the area and live close to pokie, so I would like to fish it but have no clue where to start. When you say northwest of the islands, do you mean on the main lake or on wendigo arm? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Hope to see you out there.

I believe they are talking about the islands on the main lake just west of the bridge on the other side of the islands there are a coupleflats on that side you will start to see fish houses out there when it gets enough ice

I used to have a spear house on the Wendigo side of the lake. Right out from Troop Town. There is a sunken island. Good for big Northerns. I never did see to many walleyes in the hole. My dad always seemed to spear a 20+ pounder out of there. Usually the days my head hert to bad to get up.

The best Walleye action I have heard of is in Sherrys arm on the drop offs. At dusk with a jig and shiner. You probably won't catch a lot of them. The ones you do catch are nice.

I grew up two miles from the lake.

Good Luck

I would definately say lighter line is better on pokegama winter and summer as is generally the case on your clear lakes. 6lb is ok but dont be afraid to use 4lb and loosen that drag a bit especially if there's good light penetration. As is almost always the case on Poke dont expect to hammer the heck out of em but enjoy the ones you do catch as their almost always nice fish!
