Metro Ice Report...

wall eyell, somebody posted (I think in the main ice forum) that there were folk out on Phalen. Maybe they meant Round, but the thought of somebody on Phalen ~ yeesh!

(And that yeesh was for me - you won't see me out on the ice until there's plenty more of it! I'm always thankful to the folk who go out early & prove to me that the ice is safe). laugh.gif

I stopped at Marion in Lakeville this AM and it is NOT safe at all. Barely an inch about 20' out from the landing.

5 inches on coon lake this morning, lots of flags only two small fish to show for it. Saw a lot of small fish caught.

Was wondering if anyone would know if the bay by the boat landing at Bald Eagle has ice yet?

Five inches on Coon? That's great news. How many people were out there? Any portable houses out there yet?

A few people out in portables, it seemed everybody had their two tip-up out though. Are there any panfish worth catching in there? I jigged for awhile then threw out my other tip-up. Eating the northern tonight for dinner.

In years past, there's been some nice crappies in Coon but, I admit, I haven't fished it in a couple years. I'm thinking about it for tommorrow morning though. Twenty plus years ago I caught a 15"er on a jointed Rapala on Coon but back then it enjoyed a reputation of having nice crappies. Never caught another one that big there, but I have caught a few nice ones over the years. cool.gif

There seems to be some weird science going on with this ice?

I checked out 4 areas today, one a small pond I fish and it had maybe an ich of ice, you could shoot an arrow across this pond, much to dangerous to mess with, yet Coon Lake has 4 inches in the channel?

They are fishing on some of the lakes south of here, Cannon falls, etc. and slightly to our north, some out to our west, but around the north and east metro, nada, whats up with that? Guess I'll try again tommarrow?

The Bay at the landing on Bald Eagle is frozen over but I am sure its not safe to venture out on yet.

Coon lake was the best lake close to home groing up for crappies. But now the toothys have taken over. They did stock the lake with a ton of adult eyes this spring. I did get two nice eyes this summer fishing for toothys and relesed them so if you get one please do the same so they can be abundent and not herd on the lake. That would be great

ONe problem wit the channel on Coon is that the water is moving in there to some degree. I've seen a few trucks go through in the channel when there's been 10 -14" on most of the lake. I'd avoid it until later, but maybe that's just me.

As far as the crappies go, I think that the reputation of the lake got it a lot of pressure. A few years ago, there were a couple of hog crappies pulled out, and the lake got real crowded real fast. For the most part, the crappies have been smaller, IMHO due to the pressure. Now that it's more toothy critters, I'm hoping that the lack of crappie success for now will allow the smaller ones to get bigger. tongue.gif

so sick of the 40's cannot wait for some COLD!!! I went out on friday behind my place on lake hazeltine in chaska, there was two inches or so, put my camera down and i was like in 3 foot of water about 50 yards from shore LOL... I used a big screw driver and a hammer to punch a hole. So i take it that it is a shallow lake and it has lost most of its ice over the weekend...its gonna be a long time!

How is bald eagle going, is the bay still froze over and if so how far out?

There is still some ice in the bay, its not quite out to the point yet. It doesn't appear to be very thick, and now there is standing water on it.

I'll let you know as soon as the bay is fishable. I would think that the bay would thicken up quite a bit sooner that the rest of the lake.

How is the ice doing on coon? We still going to get out this weekend, with the rain we are supposed to get tomorrow?
