I am on a small shallow lake north of Marcell, first ice about 5 days ago, has been popping and snapping for the last two days and now open water has shown up just out from our access. The deer are walking on the edge but would not trust anything out beyond 10-20 yards. Another couple of weeks at least unless the temp really plunges.

I am new to the area. Does anyone have good suggestions for early ice eyes? or crappies? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

How daring are you. There is 2 inches on sylvan bay, and 3 inches on a few other lakes around the area. Then there are some with no ice. Safety is number one. Caught a few northern on Sylvan today.

Were you running the tip-ups out there today? I was the guy in the flannel that walked out and talked to the guy fishing 'gills in shallow. I'll be out there in the blue one man fish trap tomorrow evening.

I haven't looked at Moose yet. I'll probably head up there next week one evening. It's time!

Hey Matt, You've never shot a duck in your life. Finally got out on the ice. The bay has a big crack in the middle with water seeping out of it. I think I'll give it a few more days.

So? I've seen a couple of houses here and there, but none of the lakes I checked out were good. Is there anything SAFE out there? I'm not the type to take a chance on just a couple of inches. Not much for December swimming...

I was on little moose this am and caught a few crappies nothin' big just fun.It sure was nice to see the vexi light up again and watch the bobber go down.I'd say there was 3-4 inches out there, walkable for me with a chisel tapping ahead. Some lakes are safe, if you use your head and a little common sense.Good Luck out there and be safe!P.S. next stop is walleyes on big moose. wink.gif

Mag. Do you fish Little moose alot. We fished out there alot, a couple of years ago. When no one else use to fish it. Use to be awesome. Know it seems to be in a decline. We still catch fish there but not like we use to. Shoot me an e-mail.

Hoyt.I also have only fished out there about three years.A buddy of mine tried it back then and had good luck,so we decided to try it and pounded em'.I'm not much for keeping alot of fish but sure like to eat a few, seems like you can always depend on here to catch a few.Biggest I've caught was about 12 inches, actually my son caught it.Great place to take kids for some action.Good Luck!

Trapper.I haven't been out there yet, was going to check.Someone has to be first, might as well be me crazy.gifMy luck is either you catch them 12-13 inches or 18-21 inches not much in between.Mostly jigging spoons and a shiner head.Definately some of the tastiest walleyes around.Save some for me! smile.gif

I think I saw you on Little Moose last Saturday. I was at the DNR Auction in Rapids. Our family has a cabin on Little Moose. I was checking the ice at the dock and it looked a little scary but, I saw a portable and a couple of people. Must of been you!!!!!!!!!

Fished a lake North on HWY 38 today. Had 4-5 inches of ice. Alot of water on top of the ice. Hopefully this rain/mist won't mess up the ice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Little Jay Gould has from 3+ to 6+ inches as of yesterday (12/18/04). Pulled a couple jumbo's out of 10 feet and a few smaller pike from 18 to 42 feet. Didn't want to mess with Big Jay yet (having the river and power plant warming things up). Woke up to -20 this morning. That'll help.
