Ice Conditions - Post here

Recommended Posts

When you've got the fever, you do some pretty dumb stuff. I have not been out, but I have my first guide trip next week so I will have to do a little scouting this weekend. We are making some serious ice and you will definitely see people out this weekend in numbers.

I know Pelican is hot at early ice, but that is a little too crazy for me. Swimming in December is not my idea of a good time.

I just got back home from doing the rounds. I chipped a hole on the west side of Gull, 4.5 inches of good ice. I continued my way around the lake and spotted hard-sided houses on Round and North Long. There were also two different groups of fishermen/women off the Hole-in-the-Day area. There will be twenty groups out tomorrow. Just make sure you don't assume all lakes have unifrom ice depths. The culvert areas on Round and Gull are not safe right now. It's going to continue making ice and by next week I'm thinking I'll have some houses out.

Was out on Round tonight. There was 8 to 9 inches where we were. I really thought there would be less. Round had opened up a little last week and those areas had 5 to 6 inches on the average. Caught 4 eyes. 3 small ones and 1 24.5 skinny eye. Looked like it hasn't been eating very well. THE KID.

I saw a guy driving his car out on a lake near Crosslake on Saturday. I think he was insane, we walked out and checked in many places and although the ice was 6" in places, it was 3 1/2 to 4 in other spots. It just didn't seem safe for driving to me but he was out there quite a ways.

Hey WalleyeDan,

Heard you on "Bear Facts and Fish Tails" last night. Just wondering if your hands and feet have thawed out yet?

I'm just waiting for walkable ice on either Big Trout or Lower Hay. No whitefish reports yet.

Lots of ice fellas! One of my guides said that the ice has doubled in the last couple of days. It is really starting to get thick. We have as much 14-16 inches on some lakes. Gull lake is trailing the others but the reports I've heard is 10 inches on Gull. With a couple of more days like this I'd say it's time to fire up the gas augers.

yes the ice is becoming perfect--thank goodness for the cold weather--gull has good ice to move around on but not yet with vehicles--round and north long have had some cars on them-10-14 inches on them but it is a variable--the ice tho is good ice now-the early slush has frozen hard with good clear ice now being formed as we speak--with the great sounding weather this next week it should be fantastic out there--give us a call or email for up to date reports and all have a Merry Christmas

I just wanted to make everyone aware of the ice caonditions on Gull. They are great for the most part, 10-12 inches right now. Please be cautious if you are startring to drive vehicles out there. The normal yearly ice cracks are starting to show up. One that I'm aware of is running from Sandy Point on the west side of the lake, up to Grassy Point on the north side. Be careful when fishing or travelling in this area. We're open all weekend to answer any questions about the ice or the bite in the area. Merry Christmas Everyone!

I just drove by Gull on 371. Just a word of caution - it looks like there is a pretty sizable ice heave stretching for quite a long distance. It looks like it's running past Holman Point to Polks Flat. So be careful if you head out there, especially if you're out in low light conditions!

AWH is right-there is a pretty good size pressure ridge on the 371 bay, also there are a couple of smaller one towards grassy and the Quarterdeck Restaurant. But use the right frame of mind and stay away from them. Fishing is going well in the area and now that christmas is over, most will be concentrating on fishing so the reports will be a bit more accurate with more reports coming in from customers. So stay tuned!! Bill

You beat me to it AWH. Be careful everyone when fishing the east side of the lake. I was out there this evening to get the latest for everyone. It really appears to be a nasty one. So please use caution. Be especially careful in the Holmans Point area, that is typically a bad spot every year. The ridge runs from Holmans to the North side of Polks Flat. Some anglers have been crossing it but I'd advise waiting a few days. One angler tried crossing the ridge on Sunday morning and dropped the front end in. Luckily he was able to back out. Overall the ice is great out there. We had 16 inches of solid ice. I was surprised we had that much. Should be a great week for fishing.
