Actually, I received the extravaganza's brochure in the mail today. Contest is Jan. 22. I'd give you the link to their website, but thats not allowed. So just do a googlwe search for it, and I think you'd have the rules!

You will have a blast at the Gull Lake Ice Tourney. It is one of the best run events around. The rules are pretty basic and can be found at their website. Like smartguy said it is scheduled for Jan. 22 this year. It's a luck game that goes to a great cause. Just keep it simple and travel light.

-5 Gallon Pail

-Small sled(optional)

-Flasher Depthfinder (optional but I hate fishing without one)

-Couple of Ice Rods and small amount of tackle

-Small amount of minnows and wax worms/maggots

Most anglers use the shuttles. One of the parking lots is right accross the street from our shop.

When you come up stop in for a free lakemap of the contest area, and good luck in the contest. It doesn't always take a big fish to win. In years past I've seen someone with a small perch take home $10000.

No shelters allowed! Tought to keep the hole from Iceing up, an old trick I know is a coffee can with charcoal near the hole!

HunterHughes,

It's a major craphoot! It's an awesome tournament but everyone has a theory and the bottom line is having a little skill and a lot of luck!! 10 feet, 40 feet, 60 feet or anywhere in between. I think the best is to fish deep and say your prayers. Just make sure if you use the charcoal, please bring it back home with you. One year I could not believe all the coal left on the ice and a lot of other stuff. It is an awesome event for an awesome cause. Most of the money goes to the Confidence Learning Center. I'm going to win something one of these years!!

Personally I've always preferred the North and West ends of the contest area. But it's very unpredictable I always like to set up in 35-50 feet, thats where I feel comfortable. Some years winning fish have come from as shallow as 10 feet. So depth isn't always a factor. If you catch something regardless of size, hustle up to the scales. One year I missed out on a portable house by about 10 seconds. I'm still kicking myself.

Will there be enough ice for the contest? I plan on attending for the first time next year. I have family that lives in Baxter, MN and they have fished it before. confused.gif

Hopefully by mid January we'll have lots of ice. In the past we've always had enough so I'm not too concerned. The forcast for December isn't looking the best but January always produces. If you fish it good luck, it's a great event.

P.S. Everyone be sure to get your tickets before January 1. We just received our tickets on Saturday. This year they cost $35 before Jan. 1 and $45 after Jan. 1. So save some cash and get them early.

The contest will happen! Things are chillin out and making ice right now. Today is December 5th and the contest isn't untill the 22nd of January, that's a long time. I'm kind of pumped after being at the Ice Show all weekend. Sounds like it's time to get the rods ready!! The contest is a blast, you will be lovin' it.
