Any body ever fish Red Rock out by Hoffman? Heard there were good crappies and am thinking about early ice. Where do you fish? Is there access other than the one public ramp? Is it even worth the drive? Thanks for the info.

Been a few years but I have fished it, at least I think it's the Red Rock you are referring to. Big perch, big northerns, and decent sized sunnies. Never caught a crappie but we weren't targeting them either. I think most people go there for the perch.

I have been there in the spring for 'eyes, but a friend of mine had a cabin there and they caught some huge perch (12" +) and some nice 'eyes. If I remember correctly it was out by the island from the access. I have never made it over for the ice bite, but I would do some more asking around. I don't know about the crappies...good luck...

I grew up fishing Red Rock in the late 70's early 80's...great lake. Fished it last summer again, lots of northern and perch...nice perch.

If you are looking out from the access...the winter crappie bite is out to your left. There is a hump that seems to attract them.

I will be out there this winter...look for a drop down, green house, with brown roof, and a spot to haul a wheeler in front. Early ice I will be in the channel spearing northerns.

I do not hit Red Rock during the hard water season. However, it is one of my go to lakes during soft water for some great bass fishing. We do ok on walleyes during the spring.

Have been by that lake many times and never fished it. Like to spear and big perch are fun. Might swing by one day and look for your shack and you could give me some pointers on the lake or we could set a time and slay some perch.

MNMuskie, I grew up and farmed 5 miles from Red Rock and knew that lake like the back of my hand up until 1985 or so. I'll bet I know know you too, although the bet would be small.

Good Perch in Red Rock, very good perch. Has anyone been out there to see scan for ice?

Normally the lake has a lot of traffic for spearing!

I understand this sight is a very usefull tool for fishing, but come on guys. a good spot only stays that way as long as people keep it to them selves. i grew up here as well ans the locals are not happy about your posting about the lake here. becareful of them springs as there are a number of them. good luck

Locals never are happy about anyone else coming in to catch "their" fish are they. People have been coming from many, many miles to fish this lake probably long before you were born.

What do you have to do to be a local? I guess I have a problem with non-tournament fishing being a competition between fishermen. Looking at the enjoyment I get from it, I would love for everyone to experience that. It's me against the fish and if I can help someone else enjoy the outdoors, then great for the both of us. But that's another discussion for another forum. Can we at least get a hint where the springs are so we don't fall through when we come on their lake?

Thanks,

Deeky

Been fishing there for a number of years.I understand not giving away too much info on any certain lake. I mean if I knew where there was a big buck I would not be telling everyone about it.Anyway about the perch you can get them out by the island late in the year. The springs are all over.South end is really touch an go with them.

Hey, didn't intend to offend, appearantly I didn't get my point across. FISHing is all it's about, not this other territorial business it seemed to be heading for. I'm not going to squat in 3 feet from anyone's shack, just need all the help I can get and thanks to those who offer - I'll give you what I've got if I've got anything to give. Minnesotamuskie, I'll watch for you, but I mostly get out Friday's, when normal people are working. Thanks to all those who have helped.

deeky- no problem and no feelings hurt. I understand and I do the same. But if I can help a guy at least get them in the right direction, all the better. BUT I don't plan on shoutin' everything I know:)

I guess a couple of years ago there was a very good crappie bite (huge slabs) going on from mid winter right on through the last ice. I hear the "locals" really did a number on them and harvested them hard for the whole period. I have a cousin up there in Hoffman who helped in the harvesting and told me about it. I think that was out in the main body of lake, maybe to the left of the access as you look out. I think that the springs are way back in the bay, around Jensons point and way back in although I can not be positive where they are. That lake is almost twice as big now as it was in the 70's and early 80's I hear. The lake was famous for its huge perch back about 40-50 years ago. It was not much for perch from then up until now from what I can gather. I know it wasn't when I was fishing it pretty hard as a "local" for 35 years. The genes are there though and I am not surprised to hear the perch are large again. If they are, it would probably be a good idea to put some kind of limit on the amount of perch the locals could harvest though.

I fished Red Rock on Friday for 4 hours and I caught 1 dinky perch. Water wasn't as clear as prior years. I was the only one out there that day but could tell there were one or two guys out there before me. Generally springs on a lake are in the same area but they can change from year to year. When I was creeping my way out Friday I could tell something didn't look right with the ice 5 yards ahead of me. I stuck the chisel out and sure enough it must have been a spring. It was out in the middle of no where. Your best bet is to keep your head up and eyes peeled for anything that looks fishy. Another tip for early season ventures is if at all possible stay away from the snow covered areas. These sometimes insulate the ice and prevent it from freezing up properly.

Sounds like there is 7-8 inches of ice on Red Rock. I am heading home for tht Holidays and will try to hit the lake at some point. If you see a green & brown perm with a 4 wheeler..that be me and the boys.

i AGREE with BT3 100% some of you guys must not realize the power of the internet....theres THOUSANDS of people reading this site every day.. think about what that can do to a small lake, if even 10% of the people that read this go there, theres gonna be 200 people out there this weekend, Daze Genz ruined lake Villard here about 6-7 years ago when he went back to St.cloud and told everyone about the wonderful pan fishing, 2 weeks later theres 100-200 people out there every day from albany, melrose, all the way to st.cloud- the lake was done after that year, nothing but little northerns for about 4-5 years!!!!!!

I normally do not engage...but...

The whole issue of "Locals"...come on guys. We live in a mobile world. Try to expand your horizon a bit. I grew up in Hoffman. Fished and hunted my entire life...now I live by St. Cloud. When I go home to see family, I buy gas in Hoffman, bait in Kensington, beer in both towns, and if I am lucky, I make it to Barrett as well.

And...to make matters worse I have a cabin on Lake Amelia by Villard...which by the way is a killer on taxes. Taxes that beneift myself as well as the "Locals."

I would suggest we all meet on Red Rock for a great day of fishing. Then go to another lake that we will discover by the time we spend talking on Red Rock. The pattern will continue and we will all make new friends and discover new places.

Public waters are a great resource...this site is a great resource...lets use both wisely.

WOW.. ya lets all meet there.....saturday at noon.... and people Bi%&# when a lake gets shot after being over fished and nobody can figure out how it happened.. people dont realize how delicate the fish populations in these small lakes can be, im not even a local to Red Rock, but if you dont agree with me you need to set your crack pipe down, because the internet can ABSOLUTELY destroy a small lake and people need to think about that sometimes. And dont try to give me any exuses that theres plenty for everyone, because quite frankly when you get the kind of volume that can come off a site like this, it can, and will get fished too hard and that lake will be shot sooner than you can post your next report.

Nitebiter, I still say the locals do more harm to a lake like Red Rock than any visitors coming for a day or two of fishing do. The fish have to cooperate too.
