ice fishing on leech?

Recommended Posts

for the past few years i have rented ice houses on mille lacs and have done ok but i would like to try something new this year. How good is leech lake in the winter? how is the walleye and perch action? WHat can i expect and where can i rent a 4 man house for 300 dollars for a weekend? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had better consistent walleye fishing on leech the past three winters than in the soft water months. I start in the 17' range near Sand Point and work deeper to less than 30' at the beginning of the ice season and then move towards the humps of Walker Bay. It's a fairly popular pattern but don't get stuck on it, be flexible. I don't really like fishing the deep humps because the fish have a hard time surviving for catch and release though. Don't tell anyone but I don't fish for perch, there's tons of little ones though, you need to work to find the big perch.

Walker Bay has some fun structure to work so get a really good map and work around. The bite tends to really focus on the sunup sundown times for 30-60 minutes and sometimes a later 8-9 bite. I'd suggest being over prepared for those hot times (extra rods geared up instead of having to retie rigs)
