Was on my way to McGregor on 169 going south passing the Swatara exit. I looked over and saw a huge cow moose trotting throuth the cemetary. I drove a mile further and passed over the Moose River. Hence the name I guess.

They are not too common around the URL region. When around the BWCA I have seen them on many occasions. I don't know how common ther are around McGregor and was trying to hear other folks experiences.

Hogeye, not to burst your bubble but they are very common in the URL area. Between Red Lake and Thief River Falls is one of the best places in the state to see a moose. Growing up in Thief River gave me the opportunity to see hundreds of moose, and you can still see a few today.

The thing I find weird is that you saw one near McGregor, my folks live in Aitkin and we've never seen a moose around there. Cool to know they're there!!

I, too, grew up in TRF and remember having moose walking the streets in January and February on really snowy years. After school one day I remember the cops shooting a moose that had brainworms and was chasing kids past the water tower park by Franklin Middle School. I got charged by moose a couple times (maybe the same one) when delivering newspapers as a kid too. Nothing like a 13 year old kid screaming at the top of his lungs running down Maple Ave. at 5:30 in the morning.

Good memories, yep, good memories.

I remember as a kid one winter my uncle had a moose living with his beef cows for the majority of a winter. This was in the Palisade area near Robinson's store, back when that was still open. This must have been 10-15 years ago. My uncle wasn't real happy about having to feed him all winter, but a bull moose isn't a very easy creature to reason with. wink.gif

My woman's parents have a place near the airport in Thief River and they have moose in the yard every winter, it's a blast to see!

Also, Blaze you may remember this as a Thief Riveren, on the shortcut between TRF and Grand Forks there are always moose there. Actually one of my brothers' good friends passed away on that road in an accident with a moose.

I was refering to the area east of Red lake along Highway 72. I know a few people have seen moose in that area, but not as many as in the past. I agree that they are very common in the TRF area and to the E towards the W end of Red Lake. It seems like there are 2 populations in MN, East and West for the most part. We need to get out fishing soon Matt. smirk.gif
