Town of Silver Bay....Fishing Opportunities?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've fished Bear and Bean for trout opener for splake and was wondering what the summertime opps were available near the town of Silver Bay? Looking for trout lakes, into catch and release. Thanks, Scott

drowningwormstoo, Theres a quiet a few trout lakes north of Finland and the Isabella area. You can get the complete list from the DNR site along with directions, stockings and surveys.

Good point, the DNR has a number of publications about trout lake. Finland/Isabella is a great area. Hogback is easily accessible, but gets hit hard. Plenty of other lakes if you're willing to venture forth.

There is a couple of little lakes in behind Hogback that you have to hike into that have trout and see very little pressure. One is Scarp and I don't know that name of the other.

Hogback Lk. report from Mid Sept. Drowned some worms for Bows & Cowbelled for Splake, fished a total of 6 Hrs. over an evening & morning. Got 2 'Bows @ 13" one was pretty chunky. No Splake.

Upnorth, the reason I thought this report relevant is because I seem to recall that one of those portage/ walk-in lakes was killed off this season (Posted on the portage trail). Anyone chime in on this?

Anyhow I'd do my research with the DNR before planning a trip around those hike-in lakes. Lots of lakes up there, give a local bait shop some biz. & they most likely will steer you right.

SurfaceTention, Steve told me that if I emailed you a link to my .jpg file on S.Fly you may set it up for me as I'm strugglin'. Let me know at [email protected]

Thanks to you both & good fishin'!

Here is a link to a DNR PDF map of the area that give a pretty good picture of the lakes in the area. http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/water_access/counties/lakenorth.pdf

Here is the base link where you can get by county maps of lakes and lake access.

Both Scarp (cliff) and Hogback/canel lake were poisened out. Scarp was poisened out on October 14th, 2002 and Hogback on October 15th. 3120 Splake fingerlings were stocked in Hogback on Nov 26th of 2002. 2000 Rainbow yearlings were stocked in the spring of 2003 and 3000 rainbow fingerlins on Oct 23rd, 2003. I'm unsure if Scarp has ever been restocked. As of the fall of 2003 it had not been. The other lake your thinking of is Steer. It's a brook trout lake. A small little pothole and really not much for fishing. You can hike in from Hogback or near Dam Five from the road.
