Deer hunting luck in OTC?

Recommended Posts

Just curious how everyone did in Ottertail County?

More specifically around the Battle Lake area. Still seems to be a lot of crops standing, and its gotta hurt the harvest.

Koeps Corner said they were on pace for an average number of deer registered.

We got 3 for 4. VERY few deer spotted though. I was expecting a lot more deer to at least come into view.

We are south of Vining, and there seemed to be a lot of shooting west and SW of our location. Other than that, it was pretty sparse shooting in other directions for the most part.

One hundred fifty deer logged into the station in Dalton. But I did not hear as much shooting as last year. In fact I did not see as many people moving around either. Lots of small deer this year. We live on a lake, surrounded by the farm and the woods, and there are deer everywhere, but many small yearling does and small two-year old deer.

I'm still looking for a duck!! HA!

I got an 8 pointer Saturday at 5 pm. We were hunting on the west end of S. Turtle. It was the only deer I saw all weekend. My nephew had a doe an 2 fawns in front of him early Saturday, but he let them walk. My brother never saw anything.

The neighbor across the highway shot an antlered doe Saturday afternoon. How wierd is that, LOL? Fork horn, still in velvet. I hear stories of antlered does being shot every year.

My BIL was hunting his farm south of Battle Lake Saturday afternoon, and watched a spike breed a doe. All the standing corn sure is not helping, but I think the bigger deal is the does are standing to be bred, and the bucks are just not chasing like they were the prior week.

Hopefully, they will be more active this weekend.

Hunting on the West end of Clitherall lake we filled with mostly ratty antlered bucks and one doe. Had one decent 6 pointer. When we registered yesterday at Ben's they said registrations were down 50 percent. All the corn was still standing where we hunted and very few does w/fawns were seen.

Hunting was poor in our area (south of Battle Lake). We ended up 5 for 13. A 14 year old member of ours shot his first deer at 7:30 Sat. AM. A nice 10 pointer. Another of our crew missed a monster that went to the neighbors and they shot it. I saw the big guy before he headed that way. I was just hoping John was there and wasn't sleeping! He was ready, but he still missed. Sunday morning was pretty much non-existent everywhere. Very few shots all around. The deer all went to the corn and sloughs.

We had a severe problem with our neighbors. We have for 20 years but this year topped it off. At 1:00 in the afternoon two guys brought hammers & nails out to a stand and started to fix it! In the middle of deer opener! They're consistent with showing up after sunrise, being loud, driving their trucks all day, slamming doors, etc. but this takes the cake. Don't know what to do about that situation.

A friend just emailed me pics of a buck that was shot near Alexandria, a 10 pointer in full velvet. I guess it had hardly any teeth too!! confused.gif That's strange.

BLB, you should see the monster 11 pointer Gene shot over the weekend. Holy buck!! I'll forward the pics to ya. Didn't see this one on your trail cams, that's for sure!! grin.gif I know they got a 6 and 11 pointer, I don't know how many others for their group. BTW, you shot a dandy too! Congrats.

You too Gissert. grin.gif

I'm still working on mine, in a different zone far far away from OT....

Our group went 9 for 12, 6 does, 3 fawns, 3 bucks, eight, 12 and 13. Heading up this weekend. They have a ton of deer and pretty much at anytime you can look out the barn window and see 10 to 20 deer in a field. We do the Quality deer management 7 farmers do it collectively so they have about 2200 acres to work this, and we do get some real nice bucks out of there first season, on one farm if you shoot a buck that's antlers dont extend past the ears you will pay 250 for it, so when you do you pretty much will be out that money for the mount.
