Smallie report

Fathead

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am primarily a "walleyehead" and I never usually have problems with the "Where & when" to fishing them on Mille Lacs. However, I am not as versed into good smallie locations on the lake. I do know of a couple on the SW end, but would like a little more input on some other areas. I am not looking for info like...Go to Popes point and fish next to the big rock at GPS coordinates...

I am just looking for typical areas that produce Mr. Bronzeback. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Dinosaur,

What would be your lure of choice for smallmouths on Mille Lacs?

Thanks for your help.

The south east corner of the lake has numerous rock reefs and they are marked with buoys. Some are connected to a shoreline break and others are surrounded by deeper water. This area has good potential for smallies and other fish. I think it is a good starting place for action.

I caught a nice 20" smallie on a tube on the SE side of the pond. It was on a break close to the rocks. 8' of water.

Also caught an 18" and a couple smaller ones too. The tube and leeches were the ticket. But the water clarity is cloudy with all the rain.

I did see a nice largemouth (about 18") and a lot of largemouth minnows in the real shallow weeds. They were mixed in with the perch minnows.

Mille Lacs rules!

I would agree that a tube is hard to beat as a starter lure. Work the edges slowly to see if they will hit. I usually have a couple of rods ready with other choices like small crank baits or inline spinners. Leeches and crawlers worked through the rocks produces also.
