Island Lake opener

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,
I was just looking at a map of Island lake, and it said there is a campground on Elmwood Island in the middle of the lake. Is this correct? If so who owns/operates it. I'll be camping up there this summer and was looking for some places to stay. Thanks Much!

Lip_ripper- Yes there is a campground out on the Elmwood Island. I used to camp out there for Boy Scouts growing up. It is kinda neat out there, it is nice and sandy beach so you can dock your boat. A camping area near the lake or at the top of the hill. At night fish from shore and you shall get some walleyes!!

I believe it is state owned. No fees, just first come first serve.

Good luck on your adventure

The camping area is on the west end of the island. I've been on the lake most weekends the past several years and it doesn't get too much use. There usually seems to be some people there on Memerial Day weekend and after that it is used very little. Not sure if there is more than one site.
Good luck and have fun if you camp there.

Hey everyone, I don't know much about the resorts around there.
Island lake should be producing more walleyes this weekend. Sunday the water temps on Blackduck were 49-50 degrees. Being that it is a nice week coming up, the walleyes "should" be biting a little better.
Good luck.

HEy everybody, The wonderful Preg. wife and I plan to be on Island this Sat afternoon and evening. Look for a green 16'boat with a white 15 johnson on the back. we will be bobber fishing either on Stony point or north end of the island. My father called tonight and said that the north side of the island is producing walleys right at dark. Hope to snag some lips this weekend. My wife caught the first ealpout that I have ever seen caught in the lake. What an ugly fish!!!

Good luch this weekend and heads up on the road construction from turtle river to north of blackduck. You have to take the detour starting this wednesday.

Have fun and be safe.

Happy fishing

Woodman,
I'll look for you this weekend if I hit the north side of the lake. I'll be in a 18' red pro-v tiller, probably by myself unless I can coax my wife on the lake. As I'm set up on the southeast side I don't venture north of the island too often but I'll go where the fish are. We'll be on the lake thru Wed. Yea! Good luck to all and to all a good bite.

Fivebucks- You better let your wrist rest before this weekend. I have a feeling that fishing is going to be awsome this weekend. Hopefully my father can get out tonight or before the weekend.

Good luck and hope to meet ya on the lake.

Looks like I can plan on a meal of fish this weekend. I've been working out on the forearm muscles so we'll be ready. I think a little slip bobber action is just what I need.

Have fun on the water.

Me and a buddy fished Island on Saturday and Sunday. First time for both of us on the lake. We caught five walleyes fishing off the point straight out from the landing and both the north and south sides of the island. Is this lake considered a good afternoon/early evening lake? We sure saw a lot of boats being launched as we left the lake around 7-8 pm. Any info would be helpful. Our regular stop(Round)hasn't been producing much.
Good Luck

Wall4u- I fished Island lake from 4-9 pm on Sat. also. We only caught 5 northerns, so congrats on the walleyes. I saw two others coaught on the north side of the island in about 15 ft of h2o. We fished stony point which is the point that you fished and the west side of the lake from the island and than the north side of the island.
Island is usually an evening lake. My father called last night and said that fishing is tough right now.

Welcome to the forum Ol'Walter...you'll have to let us know how you do.

Woodman~let us know if you make it back out to Island this weekend or if your going to give Blackduck a try. Blackduck has been fickle...Friday and Saturday we saw quite a few limits and some did catch and release of many. Then Sunday *poof* the light went out, you could scan them but folks were having a hard time getting any bites. Hoping this weekend someone will turn the lights back on! Has your dad been out this week?

Yea, Island was slow over the long weekend. Sorry I didn't make it around the lake to find you Woodman. We were putting a final stain on the cabin and that took most of the time. I didn't get on the water too much but the fish I did catch were still coming out of deep water (18'-25') with jig & shiner. My trolling motor fritzed out on Monday so it made it a little harder for vertical jigging. Things should snap up right soon.

Have fun on the water!

Drake- My father has not been out this week due to the weather. He did however get out and try and figure out what was wrong with my motor. I guess the prop is stripped out!! He went to some machinist in Blackduck and bought me a used one. What a nice Father. I plan on fishing Bemidji this weekend, and now that I am at my last day of work for the summer I may have more time to fish.

Hope you all have a great weekend and keep me posted on your fishing adventures.

Hey Ol'Walter- How is the fishing???? I haven't seen any posting on your fishing success. So bring it on and I will challenge you on fishing sometime. Oh Yeah, I would like to attend when you go fishing so I can observe your fishing ability.

Happy Fishing

Ok Woodman...you let me know time and place...wait...I better pick the place as you seem to not be able to tell if the fish are ACTUALLY hitting!!! LOL!! Yes, I have been out and doing OK...not up to your old stomping grounds though!! P.S. Walleyes are the fish with the white tip on the tail!!!

Ol'Walter- That must be the reason why I haven't gotten any Walleyes, I didn't know they had a white tip on their tail!!!J/K.
Since you are the pro, You name the place and time and I WILL BEE THERE!!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
