I never fished typo lake before, and want to check it out. Anyone ever have any luck on that lake? Panfish and walleyes are my targeted species. Is the launch open?

It used to be an old dnr walleye rearing pond I beleive, the lake is really shallow and you have to very quiet when fishing for eyes, when we went in the winter we sat on pathces of snow and did not move very much when we were fishing.

I know a guy that lives on the lake and to my knowledge he has fish it a number of times with little or no success. I think the deep spot is something like 6 feet, an old creek bed. There is a gas station just off typo lake rd. that sells bait, at least they used to? Stop and get a report from them.

I wish the deep spot (6 feet) was an old creek bed. It'd give a guy some direction to work from. However, it's just a tapered bowl, and the majority of the middle is 6 feet deep.

The carp population is enormous as well.

I did talk with a resident on the lake when I was out there, and he said they get Walleyes and Big Crappies hit and miss during the winter, and that they have never caught anything but carp during open water.

This is one of them no reason lakes, by that menaing, the fish will be where they are, and that's that.

In 4' of water. My bro caught them about 5 minutes apart in thick fog, both on a chartreuse Reef Runner. We should have dropped a marker bouy, but didn't. There was one noticable sand bar on the east side with noticable depth change on either side, but this spot didn't produce fish.

U.J.

Me and my brother went to Typo last saturday morning, and caught a couple nice walleyes at twilight. After that, nothing. That water is THICK! The maximun depth recorded on my depthfinder was 5-feet! Also tried for crappies, but nothing there either. What a strange lake; how could walleyes survive? I know they are eating bullies because one of them ralfed-up about a 6-7 inch bullhead. The walleyes caught were the whitest things you ever saw; kind of "sick" looking. Sadly, I think that lake is on the brink of death, and it wont be long before the carp and bullies take it over. Overall, it was a depressing experience.

The DNR continues to stock it.

They must see something about it they like.

How deep did you get the Walleyes?

PS, the fish being so pale is a normality in lakes with such water quality. I have seen it in Crappies many times.

In a lake that shallow the eyes, perch, etc. are going to be very light colored. As far as eating bullheads they are a prefered food source in many of the lakes I fish. Evening those loaded with perch up north I find bullheads in the shallow eyes bellies.

Had a friend who did very well there a couple of times last winter. But very hit and miss.

Typo is not on the brink of death. It's always been the way that it is now. Full of carp, dirty, and an occasional fish producer.

I think the DNR stocks it because it has moving water. It usually does not completely kill in the worst winter, and the fish have some migration options to other bodies of water as well.

I saw on the dnr lake finder that they caught 22 walleyes per net during the lake survey. I have scince fished this lake 3 times and have only caught one bullhead. however the last time I was there, a gentleman caught 3 nice eyes from the public acsess, in about a foot of water with fatheads and a bobber all in the time it took me to launch my boat. I should have just set up next to him.

Also, I believe this lake dosn't winterkill because of the lack of aquatic vegetation.

wheelierida,

Welcome to FishingMinnesota.com.

You made the same mistake that I frequently make. If that guy caught 3 from shore, I'll catch 50 in the boat. Been there...

Ray,

Thanks,
I only tried using live bait, Maybe I should tried crankbaits? what presentation would you say is most likely to produce fish on this lake?

Posted

My brother caught two nice eyes in 4 FOW on a chartreuse/firetiger Reef Runner. The water in that lake is THICK! My theory is they will respond to cranks that give off alot of vibrations.

Cranks, yes! But, I would also throw Rat-L Traps and spinner baits. Fish 'em like they're bass.

Anyone tried this hole lately?

I keep wanting to go back, but am still turned off from my first outing.

I am still optimistic though everytime I read the netting reports.

I talked to someone who lives on the lake and they told me the fishing is spotty. Best catches are early ice and early open water. One caution: my father and I were unable to get his 16' Alumacraft out on the access last summer. It was very shallow and we got hung up in every direction! It's ironic that the DNR builds a concrete access here and Martin still has a sand one. Maybe with all the rain the water levels are a little higher this year. Good luck.

You mean to tell us, that you live in a state where folks sit on a frozen lake ice fishing on a bucket all day. And you don't know what numb nuts are? 🥶 🤣🤣

On the South Shore...  There is still some good ice fishing taking place in a few areas of the lake along the south shore but many resorts and outfitters have pulled their fish houses and called it a year.  Make sure to call ahead or check social media pages for current conditions.     For those still fishing, some are still targeting walleyes.  There has been a good morning / evening bite along the south shore just prior to sunset.  Some very quality fish are being caught.  Some good walleye fishing along Pine Island as they make their way into the Rainy River and various spots along the south shore for those who spawn in the lake.   It was another great week of pike fishing for most.  Fish are starting to transition closer to spawning areas as the days get longer.  A number of big fish tipping that 40 inch mark coming topside.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt set about a foot under the ice or just off of the bottom have proven effective.  Most pike anglers are fishing in depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen from Nelson Park at Birchdale, MN (30 miles east of Baudette), which is the first full sized boat ramp that opens up, but there is open water appearing and progress has been made.  Things are happening, stay tuned as with the warmer weather, the river should open quickly. A good reminder, as of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.   Sturgeon fishing.  Once the open water appears, sturgeon are active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  There is a bit of ice fishing still happening at the Angle, but most resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  Call ahead if you plan on getting on that last ice fishing trip as some areas with current are opening up and ice guides will keep you safe.     Fishing remains very good up at the Angle.  The evening bite for walleyes has been super solid.  The pike are active and big, ready to spawn.  Still big numbers of jumbo perch throughout the area.  Very good fishing reports for late ice.  Safety first, please work through a resort or outfitter if you plan on getting out. Plan for the MN Fishing Opener which is Saturday, May 10, 2025! The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

It's tough to find the etymology of numb nuts. Lots of guesses that it came from the military and/or cycling communities, but nothing definitive. It's meaning has no doubt though...

Goodness. I feel like I'm on some kind of site for the mentally ill sometimes.  🤨 I know he said this but look at the last board printout!  He meant smurfy on April 29th!   8 hours ago, JerkinLips said: Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.   I changed it to just a date numb nuts!  April 25th!
