Babe Winkleman Gets Busted

Recommended Posts

jparrucci,

Not sure how you conclude the CO is a jerk.

Just doing his job and sounds like with integrity. Not letting the "big fish" intimidate him and his actions.

So all Grandmas follow the rules or do not deserve a ticket? How about the cases of way over the possession limits that are all too common that are often reported with some of the folks in their 60's (likely someones Grandpa and Grandma). They should not be ticketed for taking 10 times the fish they are allowed? I personally wish we had 10 times more CO's out there cleaning up all the outdoor sports.

Who you going to believe in this--The Babe or the CO? I know who I believe. Babe got what he deserved.

You mean to tell me he was actually "hunting" somewhere other than a game ranch. These "Professional" hunters usually hunt on some make believe game ranch and are probably used to having their "hunts" coordinated via two-way radios. I get a kick out of all these hunting and fishing shows and their "professional" hosts. Over the Easter weekend I watched an Elk hunt in Wisconsin! Yep an Elk hunt in Wisconsin. These two guys went to a ranch and sat in tree stands and hunted Elk in corn fields. When nothing came in close enough to shoot, the "guide" picked them up on a 4-wheeler and drove them to where the Elk were located. They hopped off the 4-wheeler and blasted an Elk on the edge of some woods. I can't believe they even show this crap on TV and better yet, who in the **** would actually allow themselves to be taped doing this. Sorry for the rant, as people can do as they wish, just my opinion.

Interesting comments, both for and against. I don't hunt so this law was information to me. Question, wonder how the DNR's of the world rationalize no radios/cell phones to communicate that game is headed your way, but it is OK to use a fish locator to tell you fish are under your boat?? Just a thought.

Husker,

As I have found out many times, just because they are on the depth finder does not mean I can catch them. Same with video cameras. With fishing, the fish has to bite. With hunting, the hunter calls the shots.

If you read the Outdoor News article, Babe admits he said the things the DNR heard, which triggered the ticket. Then in the Star Trib, he says he did nothing wrong or intended to do anything wrong. Which is it, Babe??

I think someone earlier hit the nail on the head when they spoke about the game farms. Maybe that is where he is used to hunting.

Didn't want to dig this topic up again but I was having a conversation with my grandpa this weekend and he brought up Babe Winkelman getting busted for using 2 ways.

He goes on to say, "Did you see which CO busted him- Dennis Lange."

I said that doesn't really mean anything to me, don't know him or anything. Apparently my grandpa got tagged by him years ago for shining deer. Apparently the regulations on shining deer at the time were constantly changing and getting reworded. They were out for a drive and he shined a flashlight out into a field to see if there were any deer out there I guess. Dennis Lange pulls up and says he's writing a ticket for shining deer. He proceeds to search the entire vehicle looking for guns which they didn't have any. When he didn't find what he was looking for, he took my grandpa's flashlight, through it on the dash, and broke the windshield of his vehicle. My grandpa is furious now and says he wants him to pay for the windshield. Dennis says he didn't do it and that the windshield was already broken. Grandpa went to court to try and fight this ticket and lost because apparently you can't shine a flashlight into a field period, hunting or not hunting, deer or no deer. Like I said, this was years ago and laws have changed but that was my grandpas unpleasant experience with him.

He also told me a few other stories of people he knew that got tagged by him. One guy was raking leaves at his lake cabin and throwing them into the woods and got fined for 'littering.'

Another instance was a boy was fishing off his dock when Mom called him up to the cabin for dinner. The kid just set his rod down and went to eat and he got fined for leaving his rod unattended.

I applaud COs for the job they do! I'm sure Dennis Lange does a fantastic job but these few instances to me seem so petty and meaningless. I guess all I'm saying is if you hunt or fish within his jurisdiction, you better be running a squeeky clean ship.

I believe the law states that it is illegal to use any type of artificial light during the hours of 1000PM and 5Am. Other than than there are no restrictions as long as no firearms of strung bows, or crossbows are in the immdeiate control of the occupants. Bill

I just got my Whitetails magazine from MDHA, I don't know exactly what the laws say about the use of radios/walkie-talkies, but in the magazine there was a letter printed starting on page 4. Here's a sentence from the letter, "Early that cold morning he called me on the walkie talkie and said he shot at a fork and it ran". I guess I need to read the rules a little closer, but I didn't think you could use them for anything other than emergencies.

Grandma brought them lunch, peeked down the hole, and got a ticket for not possessing a fishing license.

Discretion and judgement is everyone's best friend on the job. I'm not so certain too much of that was used in that case.

Then again, I wasn't there. But, poor Granny, she was just doing a good deed. smile.gif

Did they have a couple extra lines in the water for Grandma? If not the CO just needs to use his judgement on this case it seemed he wanted Granny to cough up some $$

Shining deer, I guess when I pull a harder turn just so my brights shine into the neighbors fields to see if the deer are there would get me a ticket by this guy because I'm intentionally "shining" deer.

Hmmmmmm, some guys have toooo much time. Sounds like this guy needs a hobby to relax with and let off some steam.........maybe underwater basket-weaving.

The CO is not charged with anything. Babe is. And if he thought he was innocent, he would get a high powered attorney and fight like the dickens in court.

But he has accepted a plea deal of guilt. He claims he is innocent, but just wants to move on. If this is how I make my living and my reputation is at stake, me personally, I fight this out in court.

To me this speaks volumes. And remember, Babe admitted saying what he did. And earlier posts have established what the regs say.

What did we do for safety before two-way radios and Cell phones?

If I hadn't seen Babe's arrogance first-hand last summer at Cragun's I'd cut him some slack; however, our Company had reserved the deck for an hour prior to a sit-down dinner for gathering and drinks.

Babe whined to the management that he wanted to eat dinner and sit on the deck too. So all of his party sit among our throng of over 100 employees!

This guy has a little ego problem. So I evaluate his general attitude about how important he thinks he is and I'd say he's guilty.

Grow up Babe.

Did anybody see Babe's tv show where he was fishing smallmouths on Mille Lacs? It was Vineland Bay south of the casino. The aspen trees in the background were just starting to get leaves on them and the cattail reeds were brown with just a tiny bit a green at the waterline. And no other boats were on the lake. It appeared to me that he was fishing at least 2 weeks before the Walleye opener and definitely before the Bass opener around June 1st. I'm sure he was probably trying to find crappies and came across a bunch of spawning bass so decided to make a bass fishing video instead.

FlyingV......
Babe shot that footage the Tuesday after Memorial Day last year. We saw him on our way back from up north around noon. I watched the show hoping to see my truck pass by on 169, but I must have not made the final cut. grin.gif

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
