Mike,

You won't have a hard time finding us. The houses are off the lake and we should have a decent sized group out there. If you take the winter access and follow that out and around you will come to the spot. DON'T go through any narrows, stay somewhat on the beaten path.

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

I'll be coming up. Should be there around 8:00. I assume by the reports that the ice will be safe enough to drive my Explorer out if I stay on the trail. It'll be nice to see some old faces, and meet some new ones! I think I'll crowd in on Matt or Dennis. grin.gif

Was anyone out there today to scout the location? The cookies are done and I'm all set to ice my first cat smile.gif I didn't get any minnows, though, so I was wondering if powerbait corn or crappie nibbles will work? I also have a couple waxies if we can find some sunnies or crappies. Supposed to be near 45 degrees tomorrow, should be a great time! See you all in the morning. grin.gif

Nice to see you again Cyberfish! Always a pleasure talking with you.

Cool Cats was a blast! It was awesome to see such a huge turnout! The food was great, fishing was decent and the company was tough to beat! Several people got their first catfish through the ice yesterday and some people even caught their first catfish whether it's open water or under the ice, very cool!!

I had a lot of fun talking with some of you and getting a chance to put a few more faces with some of the names I see here on FM all the time. It was also nice to see some of the familar faces and catch up on fish stories smile.gif

Highlight of the day for me was watching Corey's daughter catch a 5 pound catfish!! I got it on video and here's a link if anyone wants to check it out...

A big thank you to everyone on hosting this event. The food was excellant, the fishing was ok, and putting some names to faces sure helped out. I should have stayed a little longer , but other plans were made for the evening. It was great to see the little guys win the big prizes!

Dennis- looking forward to fishing and running the River Pro's to that new hot spot you told me about. wink.gif Just like the first gathering, this was a grand old time.

It was good to see a lot of my good friends as well as meeting a whole crew of new ones!

I had a great day and want to thank every single one who came. Thats what made the day for me. Meeting new friends, sharing stories with my old friends and just sharing a day on the lake.

Well Dennis, this whole get together sure has grown since the first time we did this. But you have to be congratulated becuase you have done a great job. As for the fishing, once the lights went out the kitties came to play in about 24ft of water. I stayed until both boys got to land a cat each. Cody got a 2lb and Zach got a 4lb. As for the person whom I gave my spare propane tanks and the 2 lures send me an e-mail, I'm curious as to how it went after we left. (chemist 70 @ yahoo . com) remove the () and the spaces. It was nice to put more faces to names around here.

I'm sure if he could post here he would thank you. I will do it for him, thank you the Chemist! cool.gif

Dennis and FM,

Thanks for putting on such a great event. Putting faces to names and meeting old friends was well worth it. Now the great food was an added bonus. I might have spent more time fishing but couldn't stay away from the food table. So instead I got the skunk, but that's fishing.

Lynn it was great meeting ya, this is Phil. If ya every want to get out again give me a buzz.

Rob and Eric,

Thanks for the ride. It was great to hang out with you guys again. Now let's not make them to far and few in between. Heck I'm thinking some time next week.

Again Thanks everyone whom put on such a great event.

It was great to be outdoors, with friends, a rod (even a little bitty one) in my hand and on the ice!

Big Thanks to all our illustrious sponsors, dedicated staff and enthusiastic Family Members who made it such an awesome event! Thanks also to the Catfish who graciously impaled themselves in the lip for a big yummy feast.

Rick and Sportfisher - extra thanks for the playtime our kids shared out there.

Phil - I had great time too! Thanks for the company and for not sleeping on the way home! I'm off Wed & Thurs next week and I'd love to get out.

I really had a great time on the ice. A couple of friends couldn't make it out..I rubbed it in a little AND didn't have to embellish at all! Great meeting you Holehopper/Mrs and Jr., Lynn,Poutslayer, Matt, Dennis and all the others(I'm terrible at remembering names). Thanks for the great atmosphere from everyone there, the tasty cats and the Moose Chili!

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.
