I had a hard time naming my GSP, but my aunt mentioned a name when I stopped by there place right after getting the dog and decided it fit well. She asked when it was born and I said it was a week before Christmas and she said "Holly" right away. So, that name stuck and worked for me.

Maybe thinking about a name relating to the breeder, the area it came from, or something near the time it was born or picked up will make you change your approach on what to name your dog.

I like to use names of places or things. My last litter had a Decoy, Dice, and Dakota. I had a down to earth dog named "Blue Jeans" followed by "Black Jack". Now my best female is "Ally". (PS when we were kids our dad bought us($5.00)an older dog named "Spot". We had to change it to Spock. After all you can't shoot your first alien pheasant with a spot.)

My buddy's lab is named SHOTS. Pretty cool.
My female golden is named GOOSE.
I too struggled with names and wanted something unique and one sylable.

Or your dog could get named the way mine did...

When we were deciding whether to get a lab or not my wife and daughter finally told me I could get the dog if they could name it. The next thing I know I've got a pup named "Samwise Gamgee" after the loyal hobbit in "Lord of the Rings". It could have been worse, though. He could have ended up being called "Smeagol"! At least this way I can just call him "Sam" around my hunting buddies.

Actually, Samwise is a pretty fitting name for a lab. I can just imagine setting out on some dangerous mission, looking down at Sam and saying, "No Sam. This is too dangerous, I must go alone." Sam would probably look back up at me, tail wagging, with eyes that said, "Of course you must. And I'm coming with!" smile.gif

I was lazy and named my female lab Raven from the MN Bound show. I live up in northern MN and nobody's really seen the show so they don't know I stole it from Ron Schara.

My Yellow Lab hunting companion of 12 years no longer needs her name:( , just fond memories (K-9 diabetes). She went by the moniker of "HIKA of Hazelwood", "Hika" for short. Never heard it before or since. "Abby" the young whipper snapper, has some BIG paw prints to fill!!! BTW, She is showing real promise smile.gif !

  • 5 weeks later...

Jegerjack, One other possibility, now that you know your pup better, would be "Liberace" 'cause the pup is the "peeinest" grin.gif

jegerjack,

I was trying to convince my brother to name his new pup Josey. Funny coincidence, he's going to name her Gopher Instead. Here's a pic of my 5 month old, Raven. (Which I stole from the show) grin.gif

Been out couple times this last week. Between the rain and wind there really was only one day this past week where it was actually warm out fishing.  Water temps are low mid 50s yet, not much change from last week.  Fish are still holding out off the first break on some area lakes and right up in the boat channels and back bays of others.   Been keeping it pretty simple as far as tackle used. Having the best luck with the lil hustler tubes under a small float or throwing the Bobby Garland baby shads with a 1/32 jig head.  The Bobby's have definitely been my big fish catcher this spring.

The water looks low but appears to be on the rise. We will be there  the week after opener. I have been going since 1981 and enjoying the experience. We love the variety of fish we catch and release each year. Ice went out a bit earlier than in years past. Water may be warmer and plan to target some crappies. We fish predominately in Sand Point as we camp. Good luck all and tight lines. We may consider the hike to Lake Lucille which we did 2 years ago.

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year

I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of

Thanks Mike.  I've been looking at bags of it for years but never wanted to chance wasting good meat on it.  I have a gas and charcoal grills, but really love the flavor of charcoal over gas. Most of the time it's if we have time to use one or the other.
