Red,

1/2 ton will be just fine. You will just have to haul the portable a couple hundred feet off of the road before drilling holes.

Thanks Paul..sounds like a lot of snow on the ice yet? Might be a stupid question but what about cross country in a 1/2 ton 4x4?

Paul, I wanted to take a minute to THANK you for all the work you are doing! the roads, ice conditions, your website... THANKS!

Red answered my first question, so my second question is... we are heading up tomorrow and using your roads, I am wondering where would be a good place to start in your opinion? We are going to be there at 7am. Gravel first? work to mud during the day?

Just trying to get the game plan ready! Thanks

ALL-IN

Our access is now open to all but 1 ton Diesels or better smile

Please remember to keep your speed to 10 MPH or slow. Nothing will break up an ice road faster.

I'm planning on coming up on Tuesday morning with my wheel house behind my Jeep. How hard is it to get off the road in areas? Many places to get off the road and drop her down without many troubles? Just wondering how much snow is up there right now. Thanks ahead of time, any info is appreciated.

well my brother in law and i went out of appledorns today from 10-5 and managed 1 6 inch perch. not too good, but beats any day at work. we have a friend who has their house by the highway bar(we fished south of the 4 mile road in depths 32-37 marked some nice fish too bad they would nibble it. our friends did end up with some walleyes over the weekend(i wish it would have been a little warmer so I could hole hop, but then again its january. By the way paul we loved the roads, my front wheel mini van sucks on ice but did awsome on your roads. hope too get back soon (i know the fish are there Just not hungry today) good luck to all

I would not attept to go over any banks to get off road. but I had no problems going off road where there was no banks. just watch for the drifts and you should be fine as long as you got 4 wheel drive. I wouldnt go too far from a road. But that is just me. good luck!

Is the road easily navigatable with a front wheel drive car or do you need something with more clearance? Just need to get to a permanent house on the plowed road.

We have really been adding some ice over the last couple of days during this cold snap. We are finding 18-20 inches almost everywhere that we go.

We spent yesterday widening our main road to two mile and widening the road to 4 mile.

Seriously considering heading up to Mille Lacs this weekend. I realize that the ice will fluctuate around the lake, but can anybody be kind enough and advise the ice thickness around the lake. Will be driving a Chevy 1/2 ton onto the lake if ice conditions are acceptable. Also please advise if the resorts charge you to use there roads to gain fishing access out onto the lakes, and if so, what are the normal charges to use the roads. Can someone also advise the conditions of the public access onto the lake? I really appreciate any information anybody can provide. Thanks again..

The guy in the post just before yours is paul from Appledorns report and as he just stated there is about 18-20 inches of good ice. Thats on the south east side. I found the same on the northeast and out to the flats. Appledorns like every resort on the lake do charge to access the lake and you would be doing yourself a favor by paying it. These resorts spend a lot of time and money making sure there are roads to get almost everywhere on the lake and if you have a problem they will help you out. They also bridge cracks warn of cracks etc. I highely recommend Appledorns but there are many others that are good too. Find where you want to go on the lake and then find the closest resort. If you do not know where you want to go the two resorts I mentioned are good places to start. Public accesses don't exist on mille lacs as far as I'm concerned. This lake is too dangerous to not have the knowledge of the resorts behind you. Have fun and good luck.

I agree with eyebjim...go thru appledoorns or somewhere close to where you want to fish. pay the $10 fee, well worth it. Paul from appledoorns has gone out there to "rescue" people...why...cuz they went out of his place and he is one heck of a resort owner, takes great care of his customers! most resorts do, pay the fee.

Again, thanks so much, hope to see you out there. Will be driving a 2 tone red/silver 2006 chevy 1/2 ton pickup. Will be fishing in a green and red quickflip III, stop by sat hi and grab a beer.

Paul, do you have any news on the recent bite out on the gravel? Anything going on Doe Is. Reef? Thanks! Might see you this weekend! Always appreciate the great job you do for us every year with great roads and good reports!

Havent seen any posts about snow depth. How deep is the snow on the lake off the road? Is it navigatable with a 4 wheeler?

I was up the last two weekends. First weekend was with ATVs (no chains) and we were able to get around fine. Just watch the drifts. Second weekend was with trucks, we didn't off road much, but when we did we found it easy going as long as the 4WD was locked in.

I've seen posts of people off roading it all the way out to the flats from the East side, so it should be pretty easy going.

Overall the ice is in great shape. I have gotten a couple of reports of a few roads heaving up, but nothing serious. Our roads are in great shape and the last two days have been spent chewing down banks to ensure that our roads stay in great shape for the rest of the season. We are seeing at least 20-22 inches everywhere that we have been and we are using all of our heavy stuff to move snow.

Case in point - They don't get heavier than our blower.

i'm impressed your becoming a legend in your time over there

Paul !!

gregg52,

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. I have no interest in being a legend.

We are simply interested in giving our guests the best experience possible and part of that is building the safest and best ice roads that we possibly can. Part of that entails chewing down our plow banks to prevent drifting, this helps to keep our roads open during inclement weather.

Love that machine, and I'll bet it likes fuel. This is why we pay access fees to great guys like Paul. Keep up the wonderful customer service, Paul!!!

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.
