Spirit Lake in Menahga

We just rented a cabin/house on Spirit Lake in Menahga for the week of July 3 - 10. We have never been to the area, so any info on the area would be greatly appreciated (especially kid friendly attractions). Itasca Park will be one the list, as my oldest wants to see where the Mighty Miss begins.

Looking at the DNR site, I realize that Spirit Lake is small lake fished mainly for sunnies which will be fun for the little ones. What other lakes in the area would you suggest to try for a few walleyes?

Big Sand up by Park Rapids is the big walleye lake you always hear about, although there are some significant slot limits on that lake. Don't hesitate to fish for crappies on Spirit too, it can be pretty good.
