On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.

The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,

Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in.

As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.

From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.

On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.

Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.

Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season.

Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily.

If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

The old saying of a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work is true,  but today tested me anyways. First my trailer had a flat. Them my air compessor wouldn't work.  So no way to haul the ATV.  Decided to just walk with the snow free lakes. Get to my spot and my vexilar wouldn't turn on.  I had just charged it 3 days ago.  Caught all kinds of 3-5 inch perch. Tomorrow I'll fix the tire and compessor and get a new battery for vexilar.  Probably go to church to clear my conscious from my frustrations today also.😟  Still better than work though.

We’ve moved 3 times now.  We were too deep up in the bay according to what reports we’ve been seeing.  Plus this cold front has been a bit nasty.  Reports from people on Red were they got slower too with the front.   Pike and perch were fierce though.  Great spot to bring people that just want to catch fish.  But bring lots of minnows.  We had to go get more during our move to Highbanks yesterday.  I never did get to really explore the bay for the better panfish and pike spearing.  Too cold and windy to be casual about anything. we left there with a couple pike over 26 and some 10-12 inch perch.  The couple walleyes we got were 18.5 and 23.5.  I let the 23.5 go but maybe shouldn’t have?  It was the first one.  Protected slot is 18-23 out here.   Went to a proven spot out of Highbanks for last night.  Pike, perch and better walleyes.  Starting to get a decent bucket going with 17.75’s. Otherwise they’ve been in the slot.  They only bite when you’re about buck neked so only 1 pic that I’ll put here.  You’re welcome!

You would be remiss if you don't look at Vortex.  I bow hunt as well and I had a pair of Bushnell something or other and then upgraded to the Vortex.  Amazing how clear and lightweight they are.  I wear them on a bino harness and don't even know they are.  Mine were right around 200 bucks, but worth every penny.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.
