Good update.

There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?

The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Thanks for the update. Good luck today!

Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!

It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.

I like your view.

Any ice reports for Frazer Bay?

Posted

Your reports are great. I'm glad that you got rewarded with some healthy walleye.

It sounds like the ice is ready for another season. I can't wait to get up there and get some ice on my lines as well.

Lake update:  It rained quite a bit on overnight Friday into Saturday. There is virtually no snow on the lake now, except a scant amount in the shadows along the shorelines. On Saturday there were good pools of water on top of the ice. My daughter, niece, and nephew had a blast riding snowmobiles around in all of that water/slush. However, most of that liquid water firmed up yesterday and now the lake is pure ice again.

If you've got scratchers and studs on your sled, you will be fine. If not, you better walk or ride an ATV/UTV out to your ice fishing holes.

Ask Mother Nature to send a bunch of snow ASAP.

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!

For sound to return doesn't it need like, well a chamber, hills, valleys. 🤔 The Internet? ;)

Um, sorry there's no hot redheads on this site screaming out in the wilderness for you!!  :P

Okay then I'll try this again. We just need another cold blast....and then another couple feet of snow.

Nice haul. That whitefish is a beauty.

Lots of snow is drifting up around all of the fish houses.  Plus the weight of heavy wheel houses and large trucks parked by them all add up.  1½ inches of water coming onto the ice isn't very bad.  One year I had over 5 inches come up to the bottom of my fish house floor.  Lucky it didn't freeze in that year.

About 20" of ice in Black Bay., although that's just based on how far my auger went before breaking through.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.

The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.

Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.

Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

Not much snow on the lake but the high winds are really affecting the conditions.  I made the mistake of drilling a hole outside of my house and the water came gushing up.  I spent the rest of the day blocking the house up in 3 inches of water, and nearly falling into the water a couple of times.  The muck boots finally couldn't handle it any more and my feet got wet.  When I lifted the house for another block in the afternoon the wind started pushing the back end of the house off the blocks so I stopped at one block today.  Will have to go up again on Friday to lift it even higher since the water is up to the bottom of the floor.

A couple of pickups plowed a road close to my house in the afternoon.  When I used this road a couple of hours later it was significantly drifted over.  Fortunately my Michelin Cross Climate II tires have excellent traction and I made it through without putting on my tire chains.  They are predicting a couple inches of snow on Tuesday with 15-25 mph winds, gusting even higher.  This is going to make the drifting even worse.

Fishing was quite slow.  Caught a handful of 9-11 inch walleyes and one at 16 inches.

Good luck fishing, and don't drill holes if surrounded by high snow drifts.

Wow, I never thought about that?  🤔

They must have to change their auger blades a lot more too?  😏

Not if they use Cobalt auger blades! Great for drilling through iron.   The drifting is starting to get bad on the lake, making for bumpy rides.

Well the Little Buddy heater is 3,800 BTU and the Buddy is 4,000-9,000 BTU. I figured if the Buddy is too warm at 4k, I'd crack the zipper some.

Walmart had these on clearance for $32 back in September and I couldn't pass it up despite having several other heaters already. I have actually been really impressed  with it. It gives off just the right amount of heat without turning a portable into a sauna. It does light very easy I have been very happy with it.

      23 1/2 inches here.. uffda!

I have one of these and it works well.  Easier to light than anything else I’ve used.  Compact when broken down too..  I pack that one when I’m not sure if I’ll need heat or not.   Downside is it’s either on or off, no adjustment, and I’m always worried about tipping it over eleven though it rarely happens.   I wind up using the regular size Buddy the most when I know I want heat.  I use the Big Buddy when I can bring a 20lb tank and hose and it’s COLD.     I always got headaches after a day of fishing with the heater/cookers.

I have a Big Buddy I use in my Clam Voyager thermo top, and a Buddy I use in my thermo Eskimo wide 1.  Normally I only have the buddy set to low in the Eskimo.  Both setups seem to work pretty well.  I haven't used my Sun heaters in years and I haven't melted or burned holes in anything in years either!  🫠

Transition from sand to mud the north end. It’s not far from shore. Depth varies 27-32 feet to find the edge. Watch your vexilars to help see the bottom soften up. Watch for masses of mayfly larvae  when you see that the perch are coming quick. Jiggin spoons is what was working for me and Eyeguy was jiggin spoons and 5-6 mm tungsten jigs. I think with tungsten a mayfly nymph from northland would work too. I like jiggin spoons as they are bigger and easier to see.    yes I roasted in the house so I am looking to get a much smaller heater as I have the big buddy and heater/cooker. This what I am thinking. What do you all think?

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is going great across the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with good fishing reports and expanding ice conditions. Many ice roads are now extending more than 12 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters are increasing weight limits, and many roads are now open to 1-ton vehicles pulling wheelhouses. Be sure to check with each resort for the latest weight limit and road condition updates before heading out. Fishing this past week has been very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Resorts are proactively moving fish houses to stay on schools of walleyes and saugers. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish meals and bring fish home.  The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of 6 fish, up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  Anglers are allowed to keep one walleye over 28 inches per day if desired. Lots of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Other species making appearances include eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees, crappies, and the occasional sturgeon. The "one-two punch" of jigging a spoon or lipless crankbait in one hole to attract active fish, and a live minnow on a plain hook or small jig in the second hole for deadsticking.    For the jigging line, rippin raps, pink charmers, coffin spoons, leech flutter spoons, and rattling flyer spoons have been effective.  Tip spoons with a minnow head or tail.   On the deadstick, use a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.   Electronics are highly recommended to help anglers locate suspended fish, track movements, and adjust presentations based on the fish's mood. Most resorts and bait shops rent electronics for those without their own. On the Rainy River...  The Rainy River continues to produce some walleyes and saugers during the morning and evening hours. A jig and minnow combination remains effective for targeting these fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing has also been good for anglers who enjoy battling these prehistoric giants. The preferred setup involves drilling oversized holes or three holes together, using nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished along the bottom. Ice conditions on the river vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing continues to be very good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts have spread out their fish houses across a variety of areas, some fishing on structure and others targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are reporting a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies being caught amongst the islands, inquire with NW Angle resorts to book a crappie house.   Good colors... Gold, glow red, glow white, Wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange, or a combo of these colors. With thickening ice, the rest of the ice fishing season is looking strong. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.
