My cousin sent me a couple pictures from last week's trip. After the storm, the perch kind of took over the bite and those pictured were all caught on crawlers in 22' of water adjacent to a rock reef . We caught lots of walleyes in this same area. The other picture was take from the Pike River bridge as we were leaving Friday morning. Good Fishing. MarkB

Mark,

Glad your crew had another great outing. Itโ€™s always good to read your reports. Just wish there were more of them like the old days. Sorry you hit the storm. One of the worst in our 14 years. Weโ€™ll be dealing with dock issues for a long time but nothing like the good folks in Cook have.
The fishing has come around a little since the storm. Definitely nightcrawler now. I donโ€™t get far out of Frazer but the reefs are where the action is. Looking forward to hearing from you in September.
My best to you and Linda,

RLG

p.s. Our good old red lab, Ole, cashed it in last summer, but we have a 6 month old lab now who is learning the ropes up here (and teaching us weโ€™re older than we think we are!)

Hey coming up for the 4th of July holiday.  Wondering if we have any new fishing news?  I am hoping the water is finally going down, although it looks like Rain this Friday and Saturday, and again starting the 1st through the 6th.  Hope the weather turns out better than the forcast.

We were on Crane Lake last week until this past Saturday.  The amount of water pouring in via the Vermilion River was staggering.

As jet skis frolicked in the bay and I sat staining deck boards, I had the pleasure of listening to bass surfacing and smashing all of the insects sitting on the surface. There are definitely mayfly hatches going on but probably not the big one yet. It's definitely a good time to break out that fly rod if you've got one.

Any recent info out of vermilion? Coming up for next 4 days and will report back as well. Havenโ€™t fished in the summer up there for a long time

Fish cleaning shack has been pretty quiet at pike bay resort last 2 days. Been on several spots on big bay with little success.  Family wants to lose their $$ at casino today.  Hopefully get out later today. Good luck and keep posting.

CFD200, Nice Fish!  are you on the east or west side of Vermilion?

Yeah it's been tough walleye fishing.  Everyone I talk to says the same.  Talked to a dnr guy, he was looking for a dead musky floating in Frasier Bay, and he said it is very slow. Did hear of a nice pike caught in the narrows in last day or 2.  Definitely marking fish but no takers except 2- 13 inches.

Nice pike.  You could always change the title to Winter Pike.  ๐Ÿคญ

Skunked-no-more.  Or does it count if the fish is out of season (note - quickly and safely released).   Made another "walking" trip on Burntside and again didn't catch any lake trout.  When I saw the tip-up start to spin I thought for sure I might get one, but just ended up being a 26" northern.  At least I did mark a few fish this time, and did get to use my 5th fish house this winter.  May try one more trip.  Beautiful day on the lake at least.

You mean to tell us, that you live in a state where folks sit on a frozen lake ice fishing on a bucket all day. And you don't know what numb nuts are? ๐Ÿฅถ ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

On the South Shore...  There is still some good ice fishing taking place in a few areas of the lake along the south shore but many resorts and outfitters have pulled their fish houses and called it a year.  Make sure to call ahead or check social media pages for current conditions.     For those still fishing, some are still targeting walleyes.  There has been a good morning / evening bite along the south shore just prior to sunset.  Some very quality fish are being caught.  Some good walleye fishing along Pine Island as they make their way into the Rainy River and various spots along the south shore for those who spawn in the lake.   It was another great week of pike fishing for most.  Fish are starting to transition closer to spawning areas as the days get longer.  A number of big fish tipping that 40 inch mark coming topside.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt set about a foot under the ice or just off of the bottom have proven effective.  Most pike anglers are fishing in depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen from Nelson Park at Birchdale, MN (30 miles east of Baudette), which is the first full sized boat ramp that opens up, but there is open water appearing and progress has been made.  Things are happening, stay tuned as with the warmer weather, the river should open quickly. A good reminder, as of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.   Sturgeon fishing.  Once the open water appears, sturgeon are active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th โ€“ May 15th and October 1 โ€“ April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th โ€“ May 7th and July 1 โ€“ September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th โ€“ June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  There is a bit of ice fishing still happening at the Angle, but most resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  Call ahead if you plan on getting on that last ice fishing trip as some areas with current are opening up and ice guides will keep you safe.     Fishing remains very good up at the Angle.  The evening bite for walleyes has been super solid.  The pike are active and big, ready to spawn.  Still big numbers of jumbo perch throughout the area.  Very good fishing reports for late ice.  Safety first, please work through a resort or outfitter if you plan on getting out. Plan for the MN Fishing Opener which is Saturday, May 10, 2025! The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

It's tough to find the etymology of numb nuts. Lots of guesses that it came from the military and/or cycling communities, but nothing definitive. It's meaning has no doubt though...

Goodness. I feel like I'm on some kind of site for the mentally ill sometimes.  ๐Ÿคจ I know he said this but look at the last board printout!  He meant smurfy on April 29th!   8 hours ago, JerkinLips said: Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.   I changed it to just a date numb nuts!  April 25th!
