Been fishing west end Vermilion since 1969. Mainly Norwegian Bay area. Have noticed this year a big decline in amount of weeds in most areas we fish. Anyone else?

Not in our bay! I don't think that the rusty crayfish has crossed over to the west end yet. It could just be localized???

I think the Partridge River, Wakemup and H.O.L. bays all have a fair amount of weeds. I was trolling cranks around the islands in this area last night and was cleaning weeds off all the time.

The rusties are sort of into west end, but I don't know how much.   But in my experience the weeds vary from year to year.   Like this year, our beach didn't have as many weeds as last year.   And the bay on the east side of center Island didn't either.   But other places seemed to be about like usual.

I thought that I remembered reading a statement years ago from the DNR, where they said it was unlikely that the rusty crayfish would be able to migrate from the east to west basins of Vermilion. It would be a shame if they have already. I'm sure that my wife and daughter will like swimming better with less weeds, but the fishing will suffer.

Back when the DNR was seining our beach in July I asked, and apparently they were through oak narrows.   But long way to go to get to us.   I'll keep my eyes open and my mask and snorkel on.  Didn't see any sign off them this summer.

In my opinion, the Partridge River, Wakemup, and H.O.L. bays are all experiencing a notable presence of weeds. Last night, while trolling cranks around the islands in this region, I consistently had to clear weeds off the lures.

Welcome to the forum.

Nice report, I'm glad there was no ice as of yet in any of these areas to still troll!

Interesting you had the same thoughts as another member! 🤭
