Ice gear 2022-23

I like to prep early for ice so I do my shopping early before November at least. I've never had electronics for ice fishing before and I had been eyeing up the Garmin striker 4 ice fishing bundle and finally pulled the trigger yesterday. As a first time fish finder user any tips and tricks are appreciated. I also added a few Northland gill getters, Clam leech flutter spoons and Fiskas wolfram tungsten jigs (I'm a big panfish guy :)). What are your staple panfish lures for ice fishing? Have you/ are you going to invest in any new gear for the upcoming season?

Pretty much most of my summer panfish lures will still work for ice fishing, mainly jigs and spoons.  For a very long time, I've been using Flu Flu jigs or something of similar feathered jigs.  Some wet flies have worked on occasions too.  Tiny spoons like Kastmasters in the 1/12th weight as well as Swedish Pimples too.  I've had great luck with Northland Forage Minnow spoon.   Similar Gapen Flicker jigging spoon.  These lures have been around like 20 plus years or so maybe.

Then there's the simple jig and plastics.  I like the Northland bloodworms.  There's similar plastics called Wedgees that are just long triangular strips.  Then there's those Little Atoms Nuggies which is like a round plastic plus a straight tail sticking out that always works.

Flu flus under a bobber in the spring are one of my favorite ways to catch crappies and sunfish. For ice fishing I like the Northland punch fly because it's made out of tungsten, I just add a few eurolarvae and it's good to go.

My favorite plastics are the Clam Maki Pollis. I catch a lot of bluegills on those throughout the winter

its all i ever use during the summer are flu flus or hooks that resemble a flu flu.  after the early ice out period however, the bobbers get retired for the season!!!!!!

u i usually have both plastics and real meat with me fishing both ice and open water. however i left all my plastics in my tackle box this fall..........so ita only meat this ice season!!!!!!!

I switched to plastics only in the winter and have done extremely well. Lots of great stuff out there to use. As anyone else I got a problem buying fishing tackle.

Lmao...Gulp has its time and place.  Got to expand your inventory a bit.  Check out Panfish Pirate, P3 baits or Judges Jaw Jackers just to name a couple.

Or you could just wait for the Hawk to throw stuff away again😂

Nope...Been having some Heart issues the last week or so.  Taking it easy till after Christmas.  Have buddies that have been out.  Lots of water and slush pretty much everywhere they been.  Need some cold weather to firm things up a bit.

This weather should make it easy to kick back and heal up. Gonna be horrible to get around for quite a while. To much heavy snow over not enough ice.

Get well Rick 🙏

Thanks guys!!!   The Doctor is well aware of what's going on. Right now, trying some healthier lifestyle changes.  If that don't work, change or add to my meds.

Pulling up 14 inch crappies and 10 inch gills may be taxing one one’s heart, so I’ve heard.  Yah, you should take the break and take care of yourself.  Get better soon!

For jigs n such, I get to start over.  I can’t find my main jig box so I have to rebuild.  Forage Minnows, Buckshots, micro Rippin Raps, Demons, Moon jigs and Neon Lights are about all I’m loading up on though.  So much of the other stuff I’ve tried has rarely worked better so I’ll just make it with my standards and save some room.

I suppose I’ll get some small 13 tungsten jigs too.

Wait what, a youngster like you?  You don't even have bad habits, like smoking, heavy drinking, glutinous eating or ugly woman do you?  😋

Honestly,  the pinhead has become one of my go-to baits.   I never would have thought a baitless spoon could catch so many fish.

That’s a smaller version of what I bought. I got the small jointed pro version.

Is yours as similar to forage minnow as it looks?002F5321-D56A-453C-AB81-015D20074F13.thumb.jpeg.64488c5b5583e806d3385b849c1494cb.jpeg

Yup.  Lots more options than a plain hook and a minnow or whatever you can find in someone else’s trash. 😜

I started using pinheads last winter. I have had my best luck with the blue and white. I have tipped it with wax worms.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other

That's good news. I haven't seen any ice in Black Bay yet, but it looks like the small bays should start to freeze up this weekend. Hopefully we make some ice next week.   Below is the forecast for Cook. We should have temps mostly below zero . The bottom section below shows that it should not be windy, and no snow is predicted. All good signs for making ice.
