Rainy lake fishing 2022

Recommended Posts

Hey Muskies, would you mind sharing what kind of structure and depth you found your fish? We haven’t been to the cabin in a week and a half so maybe things have changed but we have been struggling to find fish on the US side in the regular types of areas they should be this time of year.

I am here as well and interested too. I fished some bays and islands casting and trolling.  Nothing.

Graphed som fish on a reef but no bites. Caught a few smallmouth on a worm/lindy rig.

Good evening everyone.

Don’t mine giving more info. I used my graph on the first piece of structure off mainland. There were fish scattered on top of the reef but not feeding. I worked my way towards the mainland side of structure and found active fish in 24 feet. The fish hit mostly on the drop. There were still a few mayflies around but the fish were feeding on 3” minnows ( that’s what they were spitting out) Use your electronics to locate fish. If they are not active, search some more. I noticed they closed all but three waste gates at the dam today(Wednesday)which means the water level is about 6”-8” above the top of the rule curve for this time of year. Good luck to all including fins n feathers and Bfisherman11

Thanks, the wind won't be bad tomorrow so we are heading up your way. I was marking fishing on the US side at 22' but not biting.

Caught a few small pike in the bays

Went out for a while after dinner tonight. Fished an island spot close to home. Tried  there last week and only found small fish. Had been using leeches and crawlers before but experimented with shiners tonight and the size of the fish went up considerably. Not sure if it was just a coincidence or the shiners made the difference. Kept a nice bunch of fish to eat, tossed a bunch of smalls back and a few slots. 22 feet of water seemed to be the sweet spot. Good luck everyone!

Sorry to hear you lost your dock.  My dock and sauna were  knocked off the foundation as well.  Will attempt to restore when the water goes down some more.  Thankfully the cabin did not sustain any damage.  Glad to see you back on the water.

Thanks small jaw.

can’t mess with Mother Nature…lol

our place is safe. As for the dock, that’s life on the lake. Will start rebuilding this fall. Hope to have first crib in before it’s too cold. As for fishing, it was nice to be out. Went out on Friday morning for an hour. Checked another area. Caught 8 between 12” - 22”. Again kept 4 for surf and turf on Saturday. Pattern was the same as before.

Glad you had some success. Minnows seems to be bait choice. Your lucky to be able to get shiners. The only way I can get them on the Ontario side is to  seine them myself. Chubs are working well too…as you can see…

Top of the Day everyone,

The wife and I are scheduled to arrive next Thursday at Rainy River RV in Ranier, first time in 14 months. I hope everyone is recovering from the Biblical flood this year. Any words of wisdom to share on lake conditions and current fishing patterns?  So.... looking forward to being back on the water again !!!

Cheers !

I guessed Shore lunch but it looked a bit darker-thus buffalo.

I fish around the Brainerd area a lot and it's hard to find good minnows this time of year, unless you follow the bait truck to the bait store! 🙃

I could never quite understand how people even keep them alive in the heat of summer either.  Many years ago when I tried minnows in August, they were stone dead shortly after I started using them.  The temperature shock likely killed them.  I assume they're kept in minnow tanks which are 50 degrees and then you dunk them into a piss warm lake that's 75.  Always had much better luck with artificials in the summer time.

Spent last week at the cabin and got quite a bit of fishing done and attended some of the festivities in town for the bass championship. Fishing was excellent with the exception of one day when it was windy and cold and even then it was pretty darn good. One thing we’ve been doing lately that’s really worked out well is looking for structure that’s not on the map chip. There’s quite a bit of it out there weather it be small points off of shore or small rock piles near shore in relatively shallow bays 15-18 feet deep. It’s crazy how if you can find some fish off the beaten path or think outside the box and do something different the size of fish goes up substantially. Really has me thinking about how bad those fish are getting picked over in some of the more popular community spots where it’s hard to get keepers. Minnows outperformed anything else by far.

Heading up to camp on the east side of Rainy this Thursday. Wondering if anyone would give any updates on 'eyes. Not looking for your honey hole or coordinates, just wondering depths, presentation (live bait, jigs) and bait (minnows, leeches or worms)? I was up a month ago and the fish were spotty and I know it's close to transition time.

Thanks

'Pout

I made it on the lake for a while yesterday. Fishing was ok but not as good as it was the week before for me anyways. There were still fish in the same spots but not near as many of them. Maybe it was an off day but I’m thinking things are starting to slowly change to more of a fall pattern. I didn’t have any time to check many places, I’ll have to save that for the weekend. One thing I have been noticing the last few outings is there’s starting to be some crappies mixed in with the walleyes which is a nice bonus. Minnow and a lindy rig has been the ticket for me all year. Good luck on your trip and let us know how you do.

Good afternoon Poutwhacker.

The last time I was out most walleyes I caught were in 30 feet of water. Most were spitting out 3-4 minnows after being caught. I  was using a jig and chubs. As fins stated earlier, the fish are starting to be in a fall pattern. Enjoy your stay and good luck!

Hi Everyone, me and a couple buddies are going up this Thur-Sun and renting a houseboat from Rainy Lake Houseboats. Not sure where exactly we're camping at, but it's our first time on Rainy. Just hoping to get some good tips, depth, lures, and anything to help us land some walleyes. We plan on going for pikes and smallies during the day as well. Thank you in advance!

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
