What are some of the known areas of dangerous ice on Lake Vermilion?  I’ve seen open water in Oak Narrows in mid-winter near The Frog point where the snowmobile trail goes up on land.  Have heard the ‘S’ turn N. of Pine Island can also be dicey.  Any other areas to shy away from when zipping around the lake on a sled?  Share your local knowledge!

Typically you'll find an ice ridge on Big Bay just South of Moose Island extending east from Birch point. Smoothed out by traffic on marked snowmobile trails.

As for thin ice, if off the marked trails then be wary of all narrows and inlets such as Trout river, Bear creek, Black creek, ....

I rarely venture across the lake so I could tell you anything more than you know about Oak Narrows.

Some springs or something in head o lakes near shore and between islands.   years back now a guy went through the ice on a sled somewhere near schmidts island.   lived on the lake but just took a wrong turn in the dark.
