Hey guys,

Looking for some opinions from those of you who fish the lake consistently.  We take a fall trip every year and have been on the cass chain the last 5 years.  Planning on heading to Vermillion this year.  We have two dates in mind being either the 18-25 of Sept or the 9-16th of October.  Love to be somewhere in the middle but it wont work this year.  We will fish Smallies/wallys the majority of the time and planning to stay on the east side.  Would any of you suggest one of those times over the other?  I am seeing the current weather up that way and its making me a bit nervous about the later dates, but if the fishing is better by mid october will certainly risk some colder weather.  Thanks for any input!

It’s an early fall this year.

Our group has been going up early to mid October for years but have also done September. You will likely catch more fish in October but weather is hit or miss. Example is this year...we were up this past weekend and it was miserable. Snowed every day and highs in mid 30s. Last year we were up the same weekend and fished in sweatshirts. That’s the gamble you have to take with October. We just don’t have the choice for now.

Edit: FWIW I’ve had plenty of bad/windy days in September too. But the bad in October are worse.

Better fishing out weighs crappy weather for me.  We are leaning the October dates, seems a fair amount of the resorts on the E side close first week of October however.  I would imagine fish slide deeper on Vermillion as the water cools?

It's not a very deep lake, so it is all relative. Most of the lake is 30-40ft deep so it is a relatively easy lake to fish from that standpoint. They aren't sliding any deeper than on a bright sunny day in July. There is also not much of a fall turnover to worry about.
