Hello, I am a student at NDSU on the hunt for morels. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for morels? Fargo/Moorhead doesn't seem to have anything. I know it's early but it won't be for long.

I'm not from that area but I know there are found all over the state.  However, what you are looking for forest wise may differ based on region.  I have a freind in the Mahnomen area that does well.  Another in the Bemidji area does extremely well.  More popular,  pine, ash stands than elm and apple we find here.  Good luck!

I'm not a big hunter, but anytime I do find them it tends to be luck; they tend to occur in areas that wouldn't normally be "hot spots." (I've found them in the middle of 4-wheeler paths...)

If there's anything I do find TIMING is almost more important than location.--I hunt in Stearms/Morrison cty usually.--around here somewhere from ~May15-30 is typically the hot time.  (I know they always say "when the lilacs bloom", but ground moisture and nighttime temps (you need a few >50 degree nighttime lows) seems to play a bit of a role and wetter/drier years tends to change things a bit...)

I've had good luck around pine but mixed forest is my ideal. (easiest to tell--I don't differentiate elm/ash well in the spring...)

My advice:  Find some public land with slopes and mixed trees and be prepared to have more misses than hits...

Spending two hours walking in the woods and finding no morels is still time well spent, if you ask me. ?
