Welcome to FM @Jackedrod.

Both branches are good. I might stick to the streams that feed the South Branch.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Peace brother.

Some of the best fishing I've had is right in and around Lanesboro.  From the dam right through town has always been good. Can get crowded though.  There's great spots from there all the way to Whalen.

Rent a canoe from Root River Outfitters (or other) and fish the drift they put you on.  Take a small anchor if you want to hold yourself in the current.  You can stop on gravel bars and get out to walk around and hit holes, hides and seams that could hold fish.

We have caught walleyes doing this on the root.
