Ice On The St Louis River?

Hey guys, just moved to the Duluth area. Wanting to try to do some sturgeon fishing on the St. Louis River this winter. Was wondering how much of the river tends to freeze over. I’ve read that usually the start of the river does, and holds a decent walleye bite. Although, I’m more interested in trying to pull a sturgeon through the ice this year. I know that they have built spawning areas below the dams in hopes to improve the numbers, but I’m sure anything near the dam is more than likely open.

People occasionally catch sturgeon while ice fishing for walleye at park point.

Right, the harbor down by park point is probably your best bet. Sturgeon are relatively common there in the winter. I actually seem to catch fewer sturgeon the further up river I go in the winter. Wait till it freezes over and you see the walleye guy's out there then hit the harbor (river side of park point).
