Lake Vermilion by Jerkinlips

Looks like Big Bay is still open so I was way off on that prediction.  May freeze over tonight, but more likely Monday of Tuesday next week.  Won't risk fishing there next week.  May try out Stuntz Bay however.

Clear and Forest Lake by JB Masterangler

Driving home from work this morning, it looked like Clear Lake was about 90% ice covered. Forest Lake looked to be a little more than 50% ice covered. Ice didn’t stop someone from going duck hunting this morning. Seen a broken trail of ice going out to his decoys.

I’m sure we’ll hear about someone falling through the ice this weekend, unfortunately. Luckily, with the deer opener, it will keep a lot more impatient people off the ice.

Metro area, crystal lake, dakota county

Still some open water.  Some ice sheets developing.  West shallow bay near I35 iced over, but still way to thin less than 1".  Need a few more solid cold weeks.  More time to prepare the bucketcastle.

There is ice at LOTWS as shown at Arnesen' Rocky Point web sight, far as you can see.  Walkout outs by this weekend I'm sure, especially on the 4 mile bay end. Then, once somebody walks, the ATV's will follow.

Be safe, go slow, wear ice picks, and check constantly.

Ice on the majority of lakes on the Iron Rage excluding big water and the mine pits.  I did see someone out today in a hub shelter on a smaller lake.  I'm shooting for a Red Lake trip Sunday if not I'll be fishing smaller waters around Grand Rapids

Here in central MN we are looking quite well! With last nights -1 low we had some medium and bigger size bodies of water skim over. Only the bigger lakes are still open but most have locked up. Unfortunately with the forecast we will not be making much ice in the upcoming weeks. But that will not be an issue as bays of main/ bigger lakes and small lakes are in good shape. Went for A a drive on Sunday and found lakes to have 2-3” with most locked up, yesterday went for another drive and lakes I found to have 2-3 the day before now had 3-3.5”. Another I checked had 5” in close and 4” to just under 4” further out. With last nights cold and calm winds us avid early ice anglers should be good to go( with proper saftey precautions of course) for any time now. My plan is to head out in search of panfish next weekend and I can say for sure it will be a great trip to be able to get back to headwater adventures. My guess of being out on safe ice 4“+ set back about 3-5 weeks ago was SPOT on. I’m sure there will be a VERY long line of anglers heading out on URL next weekend, that will not be me I’ll stick with the less populated lakes and avoid the crowds as much as possible. Good luck to those who head out! Stay safe and report ice conditions and fishing reports! 2019-2020 ice season is here!

Silver and Long Lake are on my work commute. Both are iced over and thankfully, I see no signs of human foot traffic yet. I had plans to use my boat on Thanksgiving day (like I normally do), but it would be pretty hilarious to try and follow through with them now.

Looks like I might be checking ice thickness and fishing one of my early ice spots by that time. I think I’ll almost surely set a personal record for earliest ice outing this year.

Well, this one is only about a 1/4 the size of the one down in the cities.  And if you don't have $12,000 to $120,000 to buy a ATV, boat or camper. For the $10 to get in and $3.50 to park.  It can be fun to have a hotdog, snag some freebie pens, cozies and candy and watch the kids fish!   😉

so what kind of stuff do they have at that sportsman show?????   i keep thinkin one day i should go to it....but never do. went once years back.

I'll have to say I was getting a little bummed out watching the kids fish the pond at the show yesterday. One little kid with his dad hooked 3 fish and never got a one in! One teen girl had probably the biggest in the tank on and it broke her off!  With the smooth barbless hooks and the Walmart 1lb line. It's freeking worst then a carnival game on the midway!  Great way to get kids involved! 😒

Back in the 70s when a bunch of us early teenagers would go to the SportShow, we figured out the flies never got down to the trout with all the moving water. A little split shot solved that problem. 😆

Friday was a beautiful day on Vermilion.  The fresh snow and high winds made pretty drifts on the lake, as long as you weren't trying to travel off plowed roads.  Watched a large 4x4 truck travel off road and it hit some very large drifts, but didn't get stuck.  Not too many houses were left but many new ones were being pulled out onto the lake for the weekend.  Was a nice view at dark seeing all the lights on the lake.   Fishing was average.  I had to shovel snow off of our mobile home roof so I didn't get out until 10am.  Was a decent bite at 11am, and then from 330-415pm, but other than that it was very quiet for me.  Vermilion Fuel and Food finally had shiners so I tried those and caught most of my fish on them.   Good luck fishing, be very courteous if you use plowed roads, and be careful if you travel off road.

We went from no snow to enough quickly. I will have to go check out the lakes with updates on which ones have plowed roads around. Be safe and bring a shovel.

Last Friday, it was still pretty busy for a week day.   I've gotten a few out of there over the years.
