Grand Marais Fishing Reports

Well, my annual trip was only an extended weekend this year, as I had to use my actual vacation to go to Florida for a wedding. 

 

Drove up Friday morning after work, and was able to hit Two Island Lake for a few hours in the evening. As soon as we boated to my secret spot, a storm cloud moved over and the wind was insane! Temps dropped, and I only caught a few smallies.

 

on Saturday we went to Greenwood Lake. Even though we caught about 50 bass, it was still a slow day. Weather was perfect. Bugs were horrible! My dad caught a nice lake trout. My daughter caught her first northern pike, and I also caught one. Fished this lake for 30 years and never even seen a pike, now they’re taking over!

 

Fished Hungry Jack on the final day. Weather was once again perfect! Only caught a few bass. My son absolutely loves fishing off the resort’s dock. So the kids had a blast catching sunnies (including my daughter’s first). 

 

Was a bummer we only got to stay up there a few days. My dad stayed until today, but I haven’t heard how he did. Didn’t see any moose. Was also the first time I’ve been up there and did not catch a trout. We got our fill of Sven & Ole’s and world’s best donuts. We might try to go back up next month.

This looks awesome, your kids are about the same age as mine.  I’m really excited to show them the north woods next week, hopefully a few fish cooperate too!

Definitely hit up some trails. My kids love to hike and explore. They surprise me with their willingness to keep trekking along.

 That middle picture looks like a decent size bluegill. 

 

When my kids were little like that, it was the bluegills that kept them interested in fishing

Ya, my little guy can sit on a dock for hours and fish for bluegill.....  pretty awesome as I know I did the same.  We’d fill up a kiddie pool with fish on the dock and dump em back in the lake when we were done..... entertaining for the dog too, he’d try and catch the fish in the pool while we were fishing.

We will definitely hit up a hike or two, the honeymoon trail thing is right by the campground and the magnetic rock one looks cool, gonna get the kids compasses and check that out if we have time.  My daughter likes to fish but she’d rather combine it with exploring, so some hiking will be in our plans.... wish I had more time off, but there’s always next time up there.

Hey all, i am heading up to this area on the 6th for a week. Have never fished this area any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. bringing the camper and the boat. I would like to try to catch some lakers or even get out on superior for some salmon if the weather is good and the lake behaves. I have down riggers that came with the boat but have never used them, thought it is about time to try something new!

JB laid it out nicely in the other “gunflint camping and fishing” thread for me, though I was looking for more the smallmouth angle.  But it sounds like west bearskin has some lakers, greenwood too, and I’ve caught them in saganaga with downriggers.  If you’re looking for a combo platter of big lake feel, gunflint solitude and downrigger fun, sag is not a bad option.  It is a drive to the end of the trail then a 20 minute boat ride to get to laker water, but it is cool.  Bigger water so tougher to find fish, but they are in there.

I was watching the Ely forecast all last week like a hawk! And literally the day before we left I had to cancel our camping trip to basswood lake due to rain. The Grand Marais forecast was a little better, plus drive in versus boat in is WAY more convenient. Camped at pine trestle lake for 3 nights. Did more sightseeing than anything, due to rain and wind. Caught a few splake at pine trestle. The one day we did take the boat out on Greenwood Lake, we caught about 20 bass. Watched a deer go for a swim. Saw a bear with 2 cubs. Otters, foxes, grouse. My son was bitten by a garter snake, as he thought because they’re not poisonous, they don’t bite. Was a really fun trip, despite the weather. 

 

Just out out of curiosity, was there a salmon run on the north shore this year? All the streams were empty. I figured I might have been too late, but hoped to see some sort of activity.

That was him when he was still off in the distance. He swam up fairly close to check us out, then he continued on his leisurely way.
